rambow I have never had a valver so can't comment... But I had a GTI Engineering RE2000 fice years ago and loved every second of it!
Maybe I'm just being prematurely old (24 haha) but adverts were better back then. Nowadays they seem to bear no relation whatsoever to the product they were selling out on the street. I think Paula here had the right idea, if I were her I'd have done the same!
VW did do very iconic adverts back then. Remember the squeaky earring one? I think that's why I have a childhood connection with the mk2, growing up with these adverts!
Long live all our Golfs! So glad I finally got into VW ownership about 6 months ago, best thing I've ever done. At the moment my wife uses our MK3 16v and I commute into work in our newer wee Fiesta. I LOVE Friday nights when I get to take my baby out for a burn. I miss her all week!
I still drive mine everywhere after over 11 years of ownership. Short gears, race suspension, track oriented tyres .... matters not & it will be used all through winter
Great to see our beloved cars being used everyday. Mine is currently receiving a PD conversion as my mileage is high
The Mk2 Golf. I have owned 7 Golf Mk2 vehicles over a range of 15 years in addition to being in the care of various modified examples. A sample of the Golf Mk2 'Fahrvengen' owned and experienced so far: 8v K-Jet 8v EV 1.8 (My old University D reg) Digifant 8v PB 1.8 Digifant 8v 3A 2.0 Megasquirt 8v 3A 2.0 Of course 'Fahrvengen' comes with extra fury: 16v K-jet 16v KR K-jet 16v ABF Digifant 16v ABF Megasquirt 16v ABF NASP ( JENVEE/JORAN) Megasquirt 16v Turbo ABF ( The WOLF R) There is something about all my Golf Mk2s that give them some sort of 'soul' ( probably summed up with the poll). A soul that seems less present in my Golf Mk3 ( Der Ankor) and worse in our Bora VR5 for instance. When my JORAN died, and despite having a fleet of 4 vehicles, I felt to need to replace this soul, and that is why there is a JENVEE. Even in 8v guise it was still great to be back in a MK2 and truly experience 'Fahrvengen' i.e squeaks, rattles, smells, drive character and general rawness of a car this age. You also know you have a loved vehicle make when you get a chap next to you in traffic, request that you wind down your window only to be to asked, "are you sell'in that mate" or " I used to have one of those an oak green one with the 16v engine or in once case where I was invited to drive new Audi RennSport vehicles, the organizer at the entrance of the track, greeted me and had a good chat about the last MK2 he owned, pushed his head inside mine and said, "They all smell the same these old Golfs dont they?"... My NASP Golf - JENVEE, doubles up as a daily driver, grocery getter, experimental development vehicle and trackday car. My WOLF R is a street legal vehicle with a purpose to tackle straight line work with a full interior. It is due to be made even more savage with upgrades to take it to 520PS+ I will never get rid of any of them. Long live the MK2. You owners look after them OK...
I would not describe it as "wet dog" however if that is what it smells like to you, then yup my last 7 Golf 2 vehicles all smelt the same. It is a typical comment I get from enthusiasts, over the years of owning Golf 2s, themselves being owners or former owner of these cars. Must be the materials they used for interior trim. Do not know.
Maybe, although I was in a 26k mile valver that has been pampered ( parked in a dry garage) sometime ago and it had the same smell.
I was 12 years old when my cousin brought the oak green. Ever since then I had my eye on it. 10 Years later and I finally managed to get it off him! very hard to put my finger on what it is but Volkswagen just got it right with the mk2. very few cars boast similar qualities.
I could give you a million and one reasons why they're the best car going, and that's before even getting in it, turning the key and taking it for a drive. I'm gonna die in mine or get buried in it I swear. What has a 30k BMW got my mk2 20vt hasn't? It's certainly not quicker, and all that auto sensin **** is for useless drivers anyways. No aids around here! Mk2s rule, that's why everyone has to look as a decent one goes by!!!
Was just commenting on my mate's on the other evening, sat into it and said "Smells like an old Volkswagen". Such a particular smell!
I compare mine to a pet dog. It wakes up with a bark and most of the time you have to hang onto the leash. There's a lot of enjoyment you get that you simply don't find in modern metal. From sitting in traffic with the engine burbling in front of you, vibrating the whole shell and rattling all the slightly loose trim that previous owners have removed over and over to screaming past repmobiles with the engine howling. I spent quite a lot of time in modern cars between this mk2 and my last one and they all just felt like desensitised transports. This car feels alive.
the only reason i got into mk2's/vw's was cause every other hot hatch from the 80's im into has rusted away
