I know quite a few bought some on here during a group buy in the past so has anyone actually had any luck wiring up theirs and have any advice on doing it? Here is the wiring diagram: http://www.heatedwindscreen.com/acatalog/wireing_details.html I want to use my old rear heated windscreen switch so wanted to know what/where i get anything from and putting it together as the switch needs to run both circuits (left & right screen sides have two seperate wires). Any guidance or advice is really appreciated . Mike
Hello, Just a suggestion, but the late 80's Escort/Orion was available with a heated front windscreen, with a relay timed at 4 minutes and another relay which only allowed the screen heating to be used with the engine running. If you find one of these in a scrappy, the wiring could be pulled out and used in your Golf. The thing is that I think their screens only had one heating grid, so two timed relays might be needed. The larger Scorpio had two zone screen heating, but its wiring is impenetrable.
Cheers, what i am after really is the 2 relays and fuses then going into the one vw switch i have already on the dash, prob easy though i am no electrician. The rear heated windscreen switch i have is no longer used as i have plastic rear windows now but still the wiring in the car.
use the green/white wire on your screen switch to trigger the relay (pin 86) this feed is already fused too. everything else wire up as per that diagram. for the live feeds use spades on the fusebox next to the chunky red wires, for earth use the claw above the fusebox. you could actually just use the green/white direct from the switch to power your screen, as its already fed from the x-over relay on the fusebox
cool yeah too much for the std switch, would be ok to do 1 side though! never mind easy job get down the scrapper and cut out some vw fuses n relay holders, nick some 53 relays and you're all set
I need to wire up one of these heated screens in a mk1 i am building. A mate has the screen but i have yet to see it. Can you advise where the wiring tabs are and what size they are? i assume the standard electrical connector size but want to check. I was also hoping just to use the existing switch and wiring for the rear screen but it looks like that won't work based on the above. Can i still use the existing switch but remove the 'trigger' wire to put into the relay(s)? would it be the green/white? if so is it possible to link both relays to the same wire? Or should I just go with 2 separate switches/circuits?
cant help on the spade size, the rear screen is fed from the X relay so wiring wise it should be fine, only trouble is if you forget to leave it on fords have a timer relay to switch it off again in case you forget
so it should be ok to use the rear screen wiring (i've pulled the wire out the rear loom ready to connect to the front) will this cope ok with both sides being wired to it? assume will need to be in series. The car is a racer so a big kill switch will stop any issues if left on. hoping mike spots this and chimes in with a picture of the screen spade placements and sizes.
ah sorry I was just looking at the original diagram in post 1 and didn't look at all the other replies if yours the same as mikes screen where its 15a per side then the combined load would be too much for the old rear screen wiring as the stock fuse is only 20a. so yeah, as I said before use the switch green/white to trigger your screen heater relay, and if possible make it a timed unit that way you can switch it on and if you forget to switch it off theres no problem
looking at fused relays for this rather than a separate in-line fuse. will this one work? wiring looks to be different from the above relay diagram. http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/product.php/643/12v-4-blade-fused-relay
that'll be fine, relay is probably same layout underneath, but if not just go by the terminal numbers and you'll be fine
