My speedo stopped working in my mk1, thought it was the cable but the speedo gear has worn like an apple core. Replaced the speedo gear but still not working. Likely cause? The speedo cable hasn't been replaced but the mechanic said he tested this with a drill and it worked fine. Thoughts??

Maybe got some crap in the bottom of the speedo drive hole and it's not alolowing the drive gear to be fully seated properly, and it's sitting off centre. It woudl catch and work every now and then, and eventually wear. Just a guess really, could be worth a looksie.
