As you probably know I've been having trouble with my car cutting out and it
now does it regularly (i.e everytime you drive it for more than 10 mins) Well I
took it round to see a mechanic tonight and he noticed a crack round the
back of the dizzy cap and you could see sparks jumping about while the
    engine was idling.

Now would this actually cause the car to cut out? He said he can't be sure,
but he said it's a start and that he'll replace the cap and rotor arm for me
    and we'll go from there.

Could well be - especially if it gets damp. It's cheap and easy to fix too.

Yes, quite easily. If the spark's escaping to the outside of your dizzy, then it ain't getting to the plugs inside yer bores.
