Unfortunately crashed the Golf about a week ago, had the insurance assessor around last Friday. They valued the car at 1000. Which is ok by me as long as I can buy it back for the parts. But they have told me that they are not allowed to sell the car to a non-registered car dismantler. They said the car's a Catogory B write-off, and must not go back on the road. I have no intention on putting it back on the road as it is too buggered. Does any one know if this is correct or should I strip it as quick as possible and just let them take the shell away?
I would like to keep the 2 litre 16v engine, the koni coil overs, eibach arb's, stainless steel exhaust and 4 branch manifold, quaifed gearbox and a few other small bits. The only option they have given me is to cancel the claim. The above mods where declared on the insurance.
    Any advice welcome.

It is correct that you have to have a license to dispose of Category B write offs, so you will not be allowed to buy it back from then regardless of your intentions.

I'm also pretty sure that they wouldn't take too kindly to you stripping it before they collected but you'd have to see what they say.

Is the car worth more than 1000? Get written evidence from specialists to say that it'll cost more than 1k to replace and haggle for a bigger payout.

    Good luck

If you've got all the mods declared to the insurance then their offer is almost certainly too low.
If its the car in your sig and it was tidy befopre the accident then I'd be wanting at least a 2K payout. I'm sure if they can bend the rules to save paying out another 1K they will ;)

just cause you declare the mods doesn't mean they'll automatically value the car higher.

any chance of swapping bits over for o.e. stuff quickly? prob won't be able to do engine, but susp and zorst perhaps is poss?!

Larry, sorry to hear about that, you've not had much luck with cars....

If a grand is all they're offering cancel the claim (as long as no roadside furniture needs paying for or an
other party claim....), it'd cost you a lot more than a grand to get another mk2 specced up as good as yours..

strip it and let them collect it and take the payment.

thankfully mine was a cat C and they weren't really fussed about coming to pick mine up. so it was left to me to sort out,

Personaly I try and strip as much out as poss and get it replaced with standard stuff from the scrappy, as far as I know no parts can be salvaged from a Cat B and they have to be crushed (I might be wrong, that could be cat A?) I'd guess a local breaker will be asked by your insurance co to pick it up and dispose of it, very much dought they'd notice a standard KR instead of your 2.0 same for everything else really.

Cat A means the car must be crushed, no parts are allowed to be removed.

Cat B means the car must be crushed but can be stripped of parts before hand

Thank's for replies. Have been on to the insurance about the valuation and they seem more receptable to allowing us to keep the car all of a sudden. They have said that if I can get a copy of a breakers license then they will be happy to allow us to keep the vehicle. Anybody got one I could have a copy of PLEASE?

imho i think your insurers are full of poo, if its on private land, has had the v5 confiscated and is kept off road i dont see what the big deal is?? its NOT a cat A you do not have to break it, you could fix it up and use it as a track day car if you wanted, but you are not alowed to drive on the public roads with it!

Why they insist you have a breakers license i have no idea [:s]

Condolences Larry, hope that you can sort out the salvage to your satisfaction.

Are you going to put all the bits into another shell?
If I can help in any way let me know

Hi Chris, yes the parts will be going into another shell and thanks for the offer of help.
N1ck,thank you for the info, the car is on private land and there is no way she will ever see a road or track, very bent n/s rear quarter.I still have the V5 at the moment but they can have that anytime they want.

When i had an accident a few years back the assesor looked over the car and we agreed it was a very good example and gave me top money. Separate guy(s) came and collected the car from a garage i had the car brought back too, i wish at the time i had stripped it/replaced parts as they didn't care what they were getting.

If you can and have the OEM parts or other parts i would switch them over. If not and you have a scrappy near by, get the replacment parts there. I wish i had bunged on some crappy old rims and not left 3 mint 17's with nearly new yoko on! [:x] [8(] [:^(]

surrender your v5 and cancel the claim.

I dont quite understand this, you say the insurers want you to have a breakers licence? for what? if you have cancelled the claim its got nothing to do with the insurers!!

If you are talking about buying it back, i can see what they are on about, but even so, once you have bought it back its got nothing to do with them... [:s]

Sorry to hear about the car Larry.
Maybe you can now get yourself a nice tidy mk2 to put all the bits into, i know you were never happy with the car considering what your first one was like. That was cleaner than mine.
Just do the job yourself or if you're gonna pay someone make sure you stay clear of somerset
    :)
