A mate of mine has just had is Mk2 written off by some scrote, and is currently battling the insurance company for a decent payout..

I mentioned that it might be worth trying to keep the car and flogging it whole for spares (don't think he's got the time or inclination to break it himself). Anyone care to chuck a figure in as to how much it might be worth?

It's a '90 5dr 8v in white with less than 100k on the clock (I think) damage was restricted to the front end, so everything around the (d/side, probably) A-pillar is shafted. Think the drivetrain etc will be alright.

Worth 150 to a breaker or is this wishful thinking? Thought about doing it myself but the old man would kill me if he got back to find another dead golf in the yard :p

A breakers yard won't give you that,BUT its worth at least 200 if you were to put it on a trailer and go and weigh it in.

Cheers - by breaker I was thinking VW specialist rather than the scrappy down the road.

Not sure he'd get 200 weighed in - I scrapped 600kg of bare steel shell and cast Iron bits recently and got just over 70 (although they did collect). Besides, my thinking was more in an effort to save the decent bits by giving him a financial incentive to do so, rather than just letting the insurance cube it.

Thanks for your thoughts though

Personally i would strip it for every little part and either put them on the forums or ebay...

You could do it in day or a weekend, and probably make 500 or more...

There is always someone who needs something for there MK2, whether its 3 or 5 door

Speaking from experience, it takes years to actually shift all the parts from breaking a mk2, it isn't a quick process. And you have to put up with being told off by the mrs for spending far too much time on a forum, all to wonder off to the post office every now and then to make a fiver here and there.

If he hasn't the time or inclination i'd just battle to get the best payout from the insurance possible and let them take it off his hands, then he can spend his time searching for a decent new car instead of dealing with the inevitable time wasters involved when trying to sell old parts.

    Just my 2p.

Breaking a 16v with interesting bits on it, you'll make over a grand. If you're prepared to put in the effort, an 8v is probably 600 ish, depending on what's on it. Even standard GTI stuff is an upgrade for a driver...

It's not a quick process - you have to be persistent and keep pushing the stuff. You can always have a 'everything is a tenner' weekend when you're trying to clear the last of it.

    For example

    Eng&Box - 100-150 as a conversion unit
Or break the engine, and the head is 40, the cam is 20, ancillaries for 10-20 each (when you get to airbox, ISV, alternator, ECU, MAF all that stuff adds up)
    Wheels - ??
Suspension - even decent standard stuff is worth 20-40
Rear disc Brakes (disc conversion for a Mk1) - 50 or more
Front brakes - upgrade or cheap spares
Fuel Pumps and Lines - 20, or more if it's recent
    Driveshafts - 20 each?
    Interior - Depends on condition
Clocks - 30 for low mileage ones if they're VDO?
    Doors - 20 each
    Tailgate - 20
    Glass
    Stereo
    Headlining
    Exhaust

Or you could try advertising it on the GTI racing website. Someone will want a parts car for a project, as already said. You won't get so much, but they won't want the interior, so maybe keep that?

I'll take the steering cowelling for 10 off him. Easy to remove and money in the kitty straght from the get go.

Even if your friend doesn't want to break the car up there are plenty of really easy bits even the most novice of enthusiasts can remove:

    Rear bench
Dash surrounds (like under tray, fuse box covers) etc.
    Parcel Shelf
    Any speakers
    Gear knob
    Gear gaitor and surround
Door cards (so handles and door pulls, pins etc at same time)
    Side trim
Rear exhaust box (depending on age and condition)
    Air box/induction filter
    Rad
    Expansion bottle
    Washer bottle
    Front grille/lights
    Indicators

Thats probably a few hours work for 100 worth of stuff. Can still weight it in for another 70 too.

    Thanks for the thoughts :)

I know this feeling - still have most of my old 16v in the shed. Most of the nice bits have gone / been put on the new car, but I've still got the panels, carpets, most interior plastics etc left. I know some on here are very adept at gutting Mk2s; it's certainly taken me long enough though.

Tbh I think it's unlikely that he'll want to pull any bits off it himself (although he might be willing with easy stuff), but it's worth asking I suppose. I think the most viable course of action would be to sell it whole to someone who will then break it.

I've sent him a link to this thread anyway; will put him in contact with anyone who wants bits if he's willing to take them off

I broke a Mk2 16v in 2006 in 2-3 weeks and made nearly 2k (only 2 days to strip all the valuable bits from it and scrapped the rest of the shell). There were a lot of good parts that could be sold fast though.

Good going Deako - I've managed maybe 400 from my 16v so far, although I did keep a lot of the bits (rims, engine and box etc).

Don't think this 8v would yield as much money, but it would still be good to see some of it recycled.
Spoke to my mate recently and he's not prepared to break it himself (although I think he might be willing to pull some bits off) so the only liklihood of getting anything large is if someone wants to take the whole car off his hands....
