Just taken my Mk2 8v into the garage to sort a couple of things and the mechanic found it wasn't running an air filter in the air box! Some chuffer obviously thought this was a good idea. Anyways, what better excuse than to buy a K&N now
Only about 2 months mate, but have put in the region of 1300 miles on it so far. The bulk of it motorway. Do you reckon it would have damaged it?
Guy at work brought a mk3 gti with drilled airbox and no filter in it! He didn't notice till he got it home!
I hadn't noticed at all even after all these miles! Not sure if the box is drilled though. Will have to investigate when i get the car back. One thing i did notice was how quick my 8v was compared to the 16v Corrado i replaced it with. Ok, the Golf was noisier than the Corrado but not induction noise. I put this down to the car not being as well built. The Golf does seem tinny in comparison to the Rado and doesn't have sound deadening under the bonnet either.
I bought my car from the manager at VW in Derby, the engine had been rebuilt there, and the car maintained... Had no air filter amongst other shocking issues I wouldn't worry too much, just get a filter in soon as
I haven't had an air filter in mine for about 6 months. It's sitting on the kitchen floor. I don't want to put it in, the nice yellow paper will get dirty.
Yep, there will be one in there now as we speak! Cheers for the info guys. I can't believe the car didn't sound like a tank with out the filter.
Can't wait to see how quiet it might be tomorrow now. I wonder if this was why my car started juddering like it was missing on the motorway last week and cut out twice. The car was running a bit weak as well according to the garage. I'm assuming he meant lean.
I know of AE86 Twin Cams that haven't seen an air filter since the early 90's. And have probably done 100,000 miles in circles since then; Bap bap bap bap bap
