Apologies for posting yet more questions about my new GTi, but here goes......Changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm and plugs this weekend, but was a bit confused about the dizzy cap. The old one had a metal cylinder shaped "shield" round it with a small strap coming off that connects to the distributor. This metal item is quite rotten, so didn't really wantto put it back on. It was a snug fit on the old cap, but is loose when around the new cap, even though both caps appear to be the same.........Is this metal shield an essential item or would the engine run fine without it?

Talking of the engine, had it tuned this week (they also replaced a temp sensor which was apparently causing the car's erratic idle). The erratic idle has almost disappeared, but not gone completely - could something else be causing it? Also, when backing off the accelerator the car seems to missing/juddering very slightly - any ideas on that one?

    Any advice appreciated.......

just a shield that might make a difference to radio reception, I've
never replaced one when I swapped caps and never got a problem. I hate
the radio mind, but it still recieves OK when I've tested it.

I'm guessing your taliing about the blue temp sensor on the front of
the head? Have a search for Cleaning the Idle Stabilisation Valve (or
ISV as its known to them that like jargon) that will probably do
it, if not check for small air leaks.

Hi unknown, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what they replaced to be perfectly honest - the guy at the garage just described it as a temp sensor, could it have been this ISV he was referring to? Haven't got a Haynes manual yet so no idea where all these sensors are which is frustrating.....[:x]

If you have a digicam then post up a pic of your engine bay, sure everyone will soon identify which sender is which for you. :)
