Probably be a chorus of 'you didn't know that?', but in case like me you didn't (or gave it no thought) your multimeter may well have come with the little thin set of wires you see below. Mine have been in the box since getting the thing, unnoticed, but they measure temperature... any old temperature, don't need to be touching anything so even the ambient air temperature it's sitting in. Well I thought it was useful to know!
Very handy! My multimeter always has and always will stump me. Only use it for 2 things - checking 12v on the car and checking house wiring so I don't frazzle myself. But yet I always have to Google before I use it as never remember which setting to turn the dial to!
It's called and thermo couple and they are very easy to use indeed! I also didn't know some multimeters had em
Big Brain Time - The thermocouple working principle is based on the Seeback Effect. This effect states that when a closed circuit is formed by jointing two dissimilar metals at two junctions, and junctions are maintained at different temperatures then an electromotive force (voltage) is induced in this closed circuit. I worked in instrumentation many moons ago and had to use them frequently - they are an amazing piece of kit.
