I recently bought an engine as a donor for a 220bhp 16v project, but I think the engine is a complete abortion.

The block is a 2.0L block..or that is what is cast into the back of it....but has domed pistons and no valve cut outs, so I am guessing it is an 8v bottom end with a 16 head because there are marks on the pistons where the valves have clattered them.

Can anyone confirm that the 2.0L pistons had valve cut outs?

Anyone know what the ZE or maybe 2E engine code is?

I can't believe the thing ran at all, it must have been well down on CR with bowled pistons...and it must have bent the valves when those witness marks were made.

Sounds like a 2E - good base for a turbo project, with a 16v head ;) But they should have dished pistons as standard, rather than domed ones. I haven't seen domed pistons in a stock VW engine (I'm assuming this is a VW engine), so are they forged ones? Or did you mean dished?

So where did you pick up this delightful piece of engineering?

This is what 9A (and other 16v) pistons should look like.

No doubt its a 2E motor as 8vs do not have cut outs.

Yes 2E makes sense, its difficult to tell because the engine number stamping is pretty well corroded.

I am amazed the thing ran at all...stupid because the the thing has a nicely ported head, twin 45's and @7:1 compression ratio LOL

it usually a good place to start for a 16vt if you put the cuts in the pistons
