Try next door! I look after http://www.vwmotorsport.info Anyways, Mk2 Golfs. Pfft, I look that stuff up if I need to!
This would explain why lots of images are not loading up, and my adverts has a *5.00 as a price Been scracthing my head fecking around with photobucket thinking that was the problem.
MK4 1.6 8v 02K boxed NS shaft is 445mm between the circlip grooves. What other lengths do we want these days?
This is the latest list I'm updating: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2053758&postcount=133
my mk1 golf had a early style shaft on one side the cv joint have a cut out for the circlip you can use early cv joints on later shafts but obviously cant use the later cv's on early shafts
20.94" = 532mm - Not quite 535 532 - 448 = 84 84 - 79 = 5mm So, the bit sticking out of the gearbox end CV is 5mm. 30.24" = 768mm - Almost 769mm 768 - 680 = 88 88 - 79 = 9mm So, the bit sticking out of the gearbox end CV is 9mm. Well, we are getting closer, only 4mm discrepancy now!
Best to use the circlip grooves IMO, and from that reference point on your own shafts you can then work out different lengths that may be suitable for your needs. And of course identify a standard replacement shaft too.
Mk2 GTI. NS Overall 432mm and 420mm to middle of circlip grooves. Think that shaft is the most measured in the thread's history. This NS shaft is only 1mm different from a Rocco or Cabby with 100mm inner CVs. So probably get away with running either shaft in either car.
I'm just wondering (if we can data mine info) whether output flange to hub bearing back face is also a way forward for measuring stray shafts, pre dissembly?
Tricky that because some shafts are so similar in length. It only takes the outer CV to be canted a tiny amount and measurements are out. Like wise there are variations in the length protruding beyond the circlip grooves which is effectively a non issue.
Had the chance to measure these up at the weekend, courtesy of Ken Lark: Gemini motorsport VR6 driveshafts (top) and other ones belonging to the Sorg Mk3 Golf GTI (bottom). Bottom 4 are rifle drilled Outcome: GTI / VR6 GTI (5 stud) motorsport versions Short shaft: 435mm, 426mm circlip centreline to centreline Long shaft: 672mm, 662mm circlip centreline to centreline He mentioned these use Porsche 993 inner CVs, so that may explain part of it too, as well as shortening the shafts to compensate for the car being lower in race trim. Anyone know if the Porsche splines are the same design?
This pic shows the difference in circlip groove positions for the outer CV joint, on the 90 and 100mm inner CV equipped shafts. The 100mm inner CV shaft is the lower one in the pic. It is possible to fit the larger outer CV joints onto the 90mm shaft with some work. The inner splines also differ in dimensions but again with some work the larger CVs can be swapped too.
A simple wide track recipe for folks with mk1 platform, big block engine, currently using 020 gearbox with 90mm inner CV shafts. Possibly useful to folk choosing the Berg Cup style arches. It is possible to fit different complete shafts to increase the track of the vehicle by approx 22mm per side, or 45mm overall. NS shafts from later mk1 golf 1100 / 1300 running 084/5 gearbox, or mk2 golf 1300 running 084/5 gearbox, (1mm difference between them so close enough). OS shafts from mk2 golf 1300 running 084/5 gearbox, or mk2 golf 1600 / 1800 running 020 gearbox and 90mm inner CVs. The bottom ball joints will need to be moved outward by the 22mm each side by means of an adaptor or extension plate. The mk1 steering tie rods (not track rod ends) can be replaced with the mk2 manual steering tie rods, as they are longer and cope with the increased width.
Got a query on driveshafts recently. Anyone know if the driveshafts from a mk3 1.8 automatic (presume 4 stud), are listed as being the same as the ones equipped to the mk3 4 stud 020 manual cars? Pretty sure the widths across the output flanges of the boxes is the same, but are they 90 or 100mm inner CVs?
looking at etka manual and auto shafts are the same all 1.8-2.0 petrol engines have 100mm shafts, the only 020 equipped mk3 with 90mm inner cvs is the non-turbo diesel. the td and tdi both have 100mm (tdi is cable shift tho)
Groovy RJ. The lad is converting a mk3 1.8 auto to a pesky 16v manual and I wanted to know if his existing shafts would fit the 020. He'll just needs to find a clutch pedal now!
