Irwin Bolt Grippers Dont know who first mentioned these on here, but they are the mutts nuts i used them on my rounded caliper bolts and they wipped them off no bother thanks to who ever first recommended them saved me load of hassle
I used mine last night... when you've got room to use them, they're great. Used it with a 22mm socket, and an impact wrench, ripped the rusted caliper carrier bolts off a Mk2 rear beam.
absoloutely brillant tool, especially on caliper bolts! when hitting a spline tool in fails! they do the job!
wuold this help with my snapped alternator bolt? Ive only got 5mm to work with and that is on the end of the bolt so no sign of a head etc..
yes, ideal can anyone source 6" ones??( they do exist) but i think they are rare(but not oak green) most makes only go down to 8"
what bit would I need out of the Irwin set to grip that bolt size. I dont want to by the kit and not have the right size bit for the job. Unless Im missing the point and the bits fit a variety of bolt sizes- I dont really understand how the tool works to be honest
the irwin socket has a reversed thread so as you put it on the shagged bolt and turn anti clockwise, the irwin bolt grip screws itself on to shagged bolt, gets grip and you can start to loosen it. look on google
any size, but id go for the smallest stilson (8") you just open up the jaws, slide them around the bolt, and turn like a spanner. the jaws bite into the bolthead/threaded bar and it undoes chews up bolts, so best to replace them
sorry its a stilson. but it will get the stud out and is a very handy tool to have. cost under a tenner for a cheap one. those bolt grippers are useful too then? i suppose you use these in restricted areas where a stilson wouldn't fit, but a socket would
yeah, they do work well if you dont have the space for a stilson once you get them out, grease up the new bolts and torque them properly to avoid this sort of grief in the future
i have just ordered a set of irwin bolt grippers, although the place i got the from had two they could order, one was called an expansion set and was 19.99 and there was a 'base set' for 28... i ordered the cheap ones (obviously!!! ha ha) anyone know what they have and/or what set i actually need??
I think the expansion set is just more sizes so you need to find out what size you need and then figure out if that size is in the base or the expansion set.
oh I haven't picked mine up yet but if they are wrong I will get the shop to order the other one's.... gutter
