I've got a solid lifter cam here, but I can't identify it...

The markings are "W" on 1, the VW/Audi symbol on 2, "049C" on 3 and "WTR" on 4...

anybody have any idea which engine this is from? I want to know wether to use it or bin it.

    Cheers

Swap you for a nice sporty 270 [:D]

..... although I'm worried I'll have to raise the bonnet to clear the cam lobes

    Hi Jason
Danster has a Piper cam with similar markings he said his is a group A, stamped JYM1 049J GPA1 MEC
spoke to Piper about mine and they said they didnt recognise the stampings so not a Piper, on with the search !!

The LUQA and JYM1 is production codes (denoting year, month and day) of Estas, a Turkish company, that produces camshafts. I supplied them with a drawing for the 049 109 101 J (1800 carb) camshaft way back in 1997. As the casting patterns for the mech and hyd cams were developed simultaneously I asked them to ID the mech camshaft as 049J. Just to avoid confusion (which was quite rife at that stage due to the language barrier...)lol

The only finished mech camshafts that they manufacture (on order) is the old 276, 288 and 300 Schrick clones. Then they will be marked as either 049/276, 049/288 or 049/300 instead of just 049J which indicates that it was a semi-finished mech camshaft. These semis are used, in England, by Piper, Kent and David Newman.

Sounds like it's a custom job then?

    For sure Mike.

If it was from here (locally ground) it would have been hand engraved with a Dremel.

spoke to Kent cams and David Newman camshaft no joy, drew a blank !!
Found the contact details of what I was told was the original engine builder (thought promising) He informed me that he didnt build the original but new the history and had carried out a rebuild etc, He then told me that he thought it was a Mike Callahan Motorsport engine ( That would bne good) further investigation required.
I then checked the cam on my Hotrod engine built by Mike Callahan but identification no's different type of stamping/ etching.

KC is a Kent Cam's mark Ray...they do like to play their cards close to their chest, particularly if it's been ground for an engine builder. D is direct...i.e a solid lifter profile..and 322 "could" relate to the duration, tho the grind numbers are normally something like D10**...

I can get the profile checked Ray if that's any help....fire me over a PM if you like.

    Hi Jason
Thanks for the offer, couldn't make any headway on those GP5 cams (got three of them now) seemed to be almost standard choice for the Slick 50 cars

I have two cams I'd like some more info about:

    1. I found a cam in my Mk2 Syncro (hydraulic head) that I haven't been able to identify, anyone have any ideas?

Seems to have around 11.5mm of lift and has the following markings:

Stamped at the end: 272, HB3D
    Engraved at the end: 7650203
along the camshaft: estas, K, GB

    2.
    WTR 002 N
"Dotted markings" = AE 276 (could also be AE 076)

Sounds like a Newman 272...good all round cam for road and trackday use. I've seen 160hp using one in an open induction 1800 and good torque.

Estas is a cam manufacture, std and performance. They also supply cam blanks to some major players.
