My distributor was leaking oil before I rebuilt my engine so now before I put it back on I want to solve this- Do I just need to replace the oil seal or is there a kit available for i this? If so from whom? G&S?

It is an O-ring on the outside part which fits into head/rocker cover that might be leaking or it could be the actual rocker cover gasket which is leaking at that point.
Or it could be leaking through distributor which means stripping it down.Personally when I did my engine I replaced the dizzy with new one about 80 from vw cos it was leaking prior to rebuild just cos I wanted it to be ok from start.

I think it is because there is a few variations in dizzys and that is why you can`t see it.

sometimes the leak is not from the dizzy but can look like it is.
It is possible for a small groove to be made in the head where the dizzy fits in. So small you can't see it but big enough to leak oil around the outside of the dizzy. Two ways to fix this 1.) new head 2.) put some sump sealant (from VW) around the back of the dizzy. Problem solved.

When I was rebuilding my car they(VW) told me which parts were more likely to be cheaper than GSF or Euro etc. and for that matter those which were dearer.Very helpful.

I can repair these no probs, and I can get hold of the seals too.
The seals are difficult to come by as the main dealer cannot supply them.

I got the seal (from a specialist seals place) for about a quid - any of them should be able to get it. Can't remember the dimensions offhand but if you bring in the old one they'll have one to fit. The hard bit can sometimes be pushing the rollpin out - make sure to use a parallel pin punch, otherwise you can end up peening it in there for good!

The hard bit is usually taking out the splined metal ring that fits on top of the seal. It is possible to damage this area easily and render the dizzy useless. You've been warned!! ;)

I went ripping this evening - In my first pic is the seal just under where I have the arrow? I mean under the metal ring/plastic ring then the seal?

While taking out the Hall sender I noticed one of the wires did not have the best connection to it's metal clip so I popped it off and resolderered it (now for the stupid part) I did not note which color went into which clip - So I have 3 wires (Black,Brown and Red). The black one is in the correct hole (hole no.1 on the right in the pic) ,so which wire goes into the middle (hole 2)red or brown?

i got a new hall sensor and it doesn't look like yours. there are no wires in it.

it is just a lup of plastic with a groove cut in it. [:D]

Yup thats the seal under the splined ring.
Best way to get it out is to use a drift from the underneath(coming through the back of the dizzy) and gently tap it out. The seal can sometimes be a total git to get out too, as it'll have hardened up over the years. If this is the case, using a junior hacksaw blade, carefully make a few cuts around the seal and then try tapping it out. The cuts should give enough of a gap for the seal to collapse in on itself. Then pop in the new seal, and tap on the splined ring. Hay presto!!!!
