Yesterday driving the golf i lost all power and smoke blowing out the exhaust [:^(] today i have done a compression test to see what might be wrong, in cylinders 1,2 & 3 i have a good 180 psi, in cylinder 4 i get 0 psi!! i have taken the cam cover off to see if there is anything obvious but nothing, next step i think is to drop the sump and have a look there! there is no signs of oil in the water and the oil is clean, doubt its headgasket anyway as it was a meatl head gasket done about 20k miles ago anyone know what might be wrong??
airline into cylinder? hmmmm, not really very easy for me [:^(] dropped the sump nothing looks broken there.... think maybe a broken ring like you said riley or maybe even a bent valve, any other checks i can make without taking the head off? and another thing - when i took the spark plugs out they were quite oily
how many plugs were oily? if just no. 4 then it 'could be a broken ring? not sure of any other checks, not too mechanically minded myself have you done wet and dry compression tests?
all of the plugs were fairly oily, - not excessive but enough for me to think its worth mentioning, not done wet compression test - think ill go do that now!
well didnt get a chance to do wet compression test this evening, will see what that shows tomorrow...
yeah,i think its something you should try maybe it is the head gasket? or killed a valve??? were you giving it some stick at the time?
possibilty its HG, doubt it tho cos it was a new metal one only 20k miles ago when the new head was fitted, bent valve, again possible but then i thought the 8v has was a non-interference head/block, wasnt driving it that hard, its been driven harder before!
Was it still running even after it happened? I doubt its a valve tbh, my guess is its a ring or the head gasket has gone. Heads going to have to come off either way really.
was running when it happened and after, started it this morning, just ran on 3 cylinders... will take the head off perhaps tomorrow
Actually, I think you're probably right. Just read that hes got 0psi, if it was a ring or the HG it would probably read a few PSI at least.
Before you pull the head off you checked all the tappets, right ? There isn't just one sticking down ? Oily plugs across all 4 pots and a cloud of smoke would indicate something more sinister than a stuck tappet or even a burnt or bent valve.....making the hole in piston theory more plausable. To get 0 compression you should be able to see the hole from underneath now the sump is off and bits of metal welded to the top of the piston when you stick a torch down the spark plug hole.
I had a proken piston ring(or two) on my Jetta recently [:^(] , did a dry compression test and the broken ones gave a low reading (but not zero), Then did a wet test and it the compression shot up! Tis all sorted now... Hope that helps.
