Cheers, luckily I've got 1j0 711 202P on order they also ordered 1j0 711 202F. Which I believe is the earlier ball type.

Just picked up a mk4 shifter. A warning to anyone doing this conversion. The cable bracket on the V6 engine will not work on the 02A. Got a chifter setup with cables yesterday but had to change it for the 4cyl 02J type.
The V6 bracket, holds the cables side by side and slightly set back, whereas the 4cyl bracket allows the cable to cross each other.

The shifter could probably still be used though. I'm gonna go down the polo housing route to fit mine..

I went down the polo housing and it didn't fit right in. Still need to chop a few bits out of the bracket and the new housing. It's the right height once you bolt it in though.

if using 02J shifter on an 02A box, do you need the 0J or 02A cable holding bracket for the cables?

You need the 02J one. The 02A holds the cables at different angles.

Thanks Mat, I had read that but it mostly mentioned V6 and took that to be a different kettle of fish to the 4 pots.

One of the shift cables on my Edition one failed this week - at the gearbox end. In 260, 000 kms I have never found fault with the stock 02A shift linkage, and plan to replace the cables with the equivalent MK4 items :)

The above problem was solved easily by making a durable clamp type bracket for the end of the cable that failed. That was a year ago, I carry a spare in the glovebox :)
