    Hi people,
I'll shortly be in the market for a new gearbox for my MK3 valver and need advice from the gearbox Gurus. I know that some of the 3A Passats came with short ratios and high FD (3.94 and 4.25) but that some 02J boxes may also be suitable. I read on one of the transmission posts that some of the Passat FDs can't take a Quaiffe Diff? If this is the case I don't want to buy a dead horse.

I'm looking for real short ratios but a decent 5th for motorway work.

I have arrived at the following in order of preference:

    02A CJA fitted with a 0.75th (or 02J EVQ/EHN)
    02A CGX OR AYH/CEW with 0.75 5th
    02A CRU
    or 02A CGY (fitted with a 3.94 or 4.25FD)

A 4.25 looks okay on paper but is iot going to be too buzzy for cruising and, as such, am I better going for a 3.94?

Help or assistance from those with the required knowledge and experience would prove to be invaluable.

    Merry Christmas

    I have a EBD 02J, with a 4.24 final, and it's a nightmare...
    120km/h at 4000RPM...

How do you find the 2.9? I'm assuming you have a pretty short set of ratio's from 1-5/6?

    4.25 would be stupidly short.

I'm goign to be running a 3.94 probably with a 215/35/16 tyres, and that'll mean around 20mph/1000rpm in 5th gear, which for long distance driving would be pretty annoying.

Luckily the car wont see that many long journeys and is being built for fun. Wouldnt even think about a 4.25 unless you were racing or something.

I used a Passat final drive with 1.8t Golf ratios in my Lupo and if i remember right it was good for @130mph at 7500rpm which is pretty much perfect for track use...although I cant remember if it was a 3.9 or 4.2....probably a 3.9 from your numbers above.

The only problem was a massive gap in the ratios between 2nd and 3rd.

On an 020 box what would be used as a longer 5th as I could do with a longer 5th gear ?

What ratios are in the SQS box Bill...and how much are they to buy?

Must be a very short 5th an the shortest standard one will do 225mph with a 2.9FD

SQS will do you any ratios you like for very reasonable money, currently talking to them about 2 possible sets for 02a, synchro, straight cut, 2.9 / 1.923 / 1.438 / 1.211 / 1.048 or possibly 2.9 / 2.273 / 1.8 / 1.471 / 1.211, former set to be used with a 4.2 FD (gives me 135mph on a 23.5" tyre at 8.5K) and latter set probably with a 3.9. Have not totally decided which to go for yet, waiting to see venues for next year. Costs for a gearset are around 1300-1400 euro but if there was lots of interest, maybe a better price could be negotiated.

They do all sorts of stuff, pukka 6 speed dog sets with loads of different ratios (3500 euro), their own diffs (1000 euro) etc etc

So, this will get you a long gearbox ratio, correct?
    How long?
Do you know (no exact numbers needed) how much speed you get on every gear?
I was thinking on maybe getting a TDI box (which is longer) to go with my 1.8T (~250hp) on a Golf II.
