Anyone know where I can get a diff for my a3 turbo, it has an 02j box, looking for the cheapest possible.
I doubt if you'll get much cheaper than this http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBX-LSD-Differential-02J-VW-Beetle-Golf-Jetta-A3-Mk4-/180840521093
Thanks for the reply, yes that is very cheap, are they a popular brand in the states ? Good quality with no known problems etc ?
ohh I forgot about those... Russ do you remember if its the casing or the diff that requries tweaking?
Al, Spoke to Hotlgolf regarding this. The diff needs machining down a bit to fit in the case. Bellville washers from quaife. and some higher grade bolts.
Sweet - Bolts and washers are easy enough... and I'm going to have access to a machine shop in the near furture. Take it I'll need a OE diff to measure up the critical dimensions or is there a post anywhere as I seem to recall Mart posted WRT these diffs?
I am Russ - It doesnt put me off either. I like the idea of the wavetrak diffs but cant justify spending that on a diff. Plus up here in winter an ATB can make a difference; I used to have a quaiffe in an 020 years ago and it was magic (read as better) in the snow compared to the standard open diff. It would mean getting a spare box or at least an OE 02A/J diff to measure up - I used to work at a place that manaufactures CMMs and could probably still get a favour and have the two diffs measured meaning no ar$ing around - straight measure up for subsequent machining. I may still be able to contact Hotgolf via other channels and pester him regardng the finer points as well. Edit: It wont be this month or next as I'm about to get a new camera body.
Maybe there is someone with a diff lying around that could do some accurate measurements? Will you be fitting it yourself?
That's a possibility WRT to having a diff measured. I don't see any major issue with fitting it myself - my 3.94 box is still going strong after 30k (touches wood) - preloads are straightforward enough - it's pulling the 5th gear that freaks me out given it's so easily chipped but I would knock up a puller similar to the one I borred from Mart.
Opinions on this kit folks http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALL-YEARS...Accessories&hash=item2eb96b0e75#ht_1572wt_689
Thats an interesting device. would like to see how that works! Found the site. http://www.phantomgrip.com/tech-tips Looks to be a crude system. Using force on planetary gears throught the plates to limit slip. Can see swarf being produced with this. Its similar in principle to a clutch typr diff with the metal being the friction material.
Thanks guys, yeah found it pretty interesting myself lol, read a few reviews on them which seem to be not good as they are prone to blow up gearboxes, whether this is down to who fitted it I don't know but not worth the risk plus they aren't meant to be not that effective other than in a straight line. Hotgolf- How was fitting the obx lsd ? I work for a small tooling company so pretty sure I could have them machine the diff to suit also went on quaife website for a gander at their diffs and came across a technical drawing for their diffs, would this help my machinest out ? Note: I'm semi skilled so not up to speed with setting cnc machines etc from drawings. Will post link below have a look http://www.quaife.co.uk/sites/default/files/drawings/QDF10R.pdf
