My sisters looking at getting a golf, mk4, 5door as its for the family.

She doesnt use it enough to warrent a nice 1.8t, or anything near that engine, so ive settled her with looking for a 1.4 (i say her looking for, when infact im doing it all) but then i came to think that golfs arent the lightest cars about, and would she be better off with a 1.6?

Dont think the insurance will be too different, she's like, really old with a million yrs NCB

    Thoughts? :)

If powers not an issue, how about a 1.9D?

Reasonably reliable - ideal for family trips.

powers not, but the difference in that to a 1.4 on insurance would surely be pretty hefty?

She's only got 3.5k to spend too.

She originally told me only black or silver which made things hard, so she's added dark blue into the equasion too now to make things a bit easier for me.

    As a guide...
    1.6 & 1.9D=grp6
    1.4=grp4

You'll get a tidy 1.4 for that money but the specs are rubbish plus the 1.6 16V is a much better engine (for the weight of the car)

SDI's are pretty awful tbh, especially when you've driven a PD TDI - not sure if you've driven one Seraph but think MK3 D - ie sheeeite!!

Surely you could get her a much better car then a 1.4 Mk4 from the SEAT or Skoda Stable? Considered any non-VAG?

I'm sure a 1.4 would be fine. VW wouldn't make it if it wasnt good.

Too true...the modern small engines are fine...1.4 is just right for a city/shopping car!
cheap tax, insurance and fuel bills would swing it for me!!

The 1.4 is never going to set the world on fire, niether is the 1.6 tbh - but both are plenty quick enough for town driving. Don't forget the 1.4 is in a lower tax bracket than the 1.6 too.

the 1.6 will obvioisly be better the the 1.4 and there has been alot of talk, talk about the 1.4 and 1.6 having very bad gearboxes, id agree with the 1.9 diesal tbh, standard ones i think have 90 bhp+ i doubt there will be much difference in the cost in insurance but ive been told the 1.9 tdi in the mk4 is actully the mk3 tdi engine, unless as stated go for the PD TDI, like mine

But didn't VW also make the feeble engined MK4 "GTI" (the non turbo model) & think that was fine?

I would have thought even the 1.6 would struggle with the weight of the car, will use a lot more fuel than you'd expect as you'd have to have a lot of throttle on the whole time.

Tbh a focus is a better car for the money IMO, and cheaper to insure.

    TBH, I've got a 2.0 mk4 and it's slow. I'd hate to think what the 1.4's like.

Like the man said above. Probably better with something else...
