just wondering what people thought was a better all round choice considering cost etc ive got the choice between a 190 bhp 16v engine or a 1.8t 20v both using 280 mm brakes all round but the 1.8t will cost around a grand more also wondering if the phirm had a good rep for 1.8t conversions if not who does?
N/A.... the 1.8t is a right pain.... personally. i was advised this before i got the mk2 20v and i didnt listen. regrets. my old 8v is just as quick as the 20v with 150.
I've heard good things about 'the phirm' they've had a few feature cars at least, although haven't used them personally. I would drive both... The 1.8t will ultimately be easier to get more power out of up to approx 280bhp with a K04.. or a few hundred quid upgrading to a k04 turbo will yeild the same results. You do concern yourself more with ways of harnessing the extra power which is what I expect the above comment is directed towards. Can't really comment on the 2.0 16v the NA will be more responsive due to being normally aspirated - imagine it will cost a lot more to get that engine up to 1.8t numbers also. Really need to drive both.
just as a toy i used to have a mk1 16v that was great so i want that kind of thing really but wouldnt mind an engine ive never had in a golf just dont know if its worth it.
track toy or road toy? track id go for the valver as you will be plenty quick enough and imo more reliable with it, road id go for the 20vt as personaly I think there great motors for fast road driving.
I've got a 215bhp 16v engine and a 350bhp 20VT, im now converted to turbo power due to the fact i can keep upping the power when i get bored. My 16v is a cracking 8500rpm revy engine but i just needed more.
mk2 20vt. swichable maps 150 and 230. 150 DOES NOT pull away from my old 8v tested.. thats with the 20v running sweet, not poop. 8v just had RSturbo injectors (if i remember right) and some mk3 bits, fiddled with but standard. 230 does REALLY leave it for dead tho. but my k-jet experience was just as bad as the 20v lol (petrol firing 20ft out of the dip stick guide???!!!??!!!) so im no use to this threadlisten to the pros heh
MMMM K-jet.... love it too, My best mate has a Mk2 Monza Valver 2ltr ABF stock with K-Jet and its only a fraction slower than my stock Mk5 GTI. My track Jetta has an ABF too, but thats 12.4:1 Comp, H beam rods, balanced, 288Deg cams, stock head (No porting), Dell 45's, & Omex 200 with edis ignition. That makes 201Bhp (flywheel) @ 7700rpm and 160Lbs/ft 5500rpm. Cost around 3000 to get there. My new mk2 project is 20vt (APP) from a 180bhp Seat Leon, K03/04 hybrid, BAM injectors, Big 3" FMIC, K&N 57i, 2.5" down pipe & system, Silicone TIP ans Forge 007DV, once mapped should make over 230bhp and a ton of torque. Cost about 1500 to get there. I'm converted 20vt all the way. But the ABF at 7000rpm is spine tingling
Videos make it true! (not that i doubt you in the slightest, i just want to see a video so i can hear it and i'm hung over so the thought of searching myself causes me actual physical pain! )
You cant hear much actual engine sound from outside! at coombe, it sounds like hurricane Katrina coming past you at mach 4!...
a mk2 8v as quick as a mk2 20v...? that i very much doubt. ive had a few 8vs and been in a mk2 20v 150bhp and theres no way the 8v would have kept up. my tuned 2l 16v 9a 160-170ish bhp only just beat it. And now my mk2 20v k04 pushing 180bhp (awaiting mapping) destroys 8vs. and thats tried and tested!! lol no comparison, as a fast road car for pure smile factor its the 20vt all day!!! plus if you go oem management with the built in diagnostics for faults etc (vagcom) then 16v abf or esp kjet doesnt get a look in!!
