Apparently VW have created what is believed to be the worlds first turbocharged supercharger!!! And they have strapped it to their 1.4 FSI engine creating an impressive 168bhp and 240Nm of torque (just 40Nm less than the GTI!!)
And whats more you will be able to buy the car its being placed in - Golf GT - from next year!!

This news was released just after the Press release of the new R32!

Blimey VW are pulling out some interesting stuff [:D]

Cool, sounds like an interesting package, out of interest would that be a centrifugal supercharger?

I have no idea... just repeating press info.

0-60 sprint will be just over 8 seconds apparently.

Will come with a 6 speed manual box or optional DSG. Styling will be taken from the current GTI, but will not be identical. Will also have unique alloys and twin exhaust.

tax guidlines on new cars follow the emmisions that the car gives out, not engine size, so if its a thirsty lump, itll still be high tax ;)

I'm sure lancia and others have been there first. The ultimate lancia delta integrale has a supercharger and turbo, super came in first until the turbo built boost, then the supercharger was cut out and the turbo cut in.

Still though, i need one of these inductions systems, how about sticking it on a 2.0 20v lump? Monster hybrid thing.

I'm guessing this is not a turbo / supercharger combo? if it is its not the worlds first, thats for certain. If it isnt, wtf IS it? [:s]

what do they mean turbocharged supercharger? Do they mean it's compound charged (i.e. has a turbo & a supercharger) or a Vortex style centrifugal supercharger (which is like half a turbo with a belt drive).

I had heard a rumour of a 1.0litre compound charged engine VW were developing, I guess this is it!

    sounds pretty cool!

well it does have to lug the ample mk5 corpse and its various 'refinements' along with it.

considering its running a 2.0 turbo the performance of the mk5 gti is a bit poor too.

have to remember (assuming constant engine power, good traction and an able driver) weight is the main factor affecting the acceleration of a vehicle.. at relatively low speeds anyway.

as you hit motorway speeds drag takes over, as it squares with velocity.

would be interesting to see how far you could wind the boost up before it turns into a 12k grenade.

..and i wonder how long itll be before we see one in a mk1 [:D]

edit: servicing will be painful with a charger and a turbo!

I was speaking with old and bold BMW engineer form goodwood, they had a 1.5Li engine from the 1980's that had 1000bhp, they spent 1 million quid to develop it and used it once. 168, with todays technology they should be getting well over 200 horses

FFS, what a bunch of blinkered fools

There is more to building a MASS produced car than peak power figures and 0-60 times.

No doubt they could have huge bhp, but at the expense of servicing, lifespan, cost, ease of use etc etc

Really do wonder about folk sometimes [:[]

Absolutely, they are selling mass produced road cars here. They have to conform to emissions/safety regulations and at least be reliable.
