Check the gasket packet - if it's an Elring they usually say.

    From memory, I think it's 40NM, 60NM, + 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees.

I was going to ask this question too - hopefully putting the head back on my 16v this weekend now the necessary bits have arrived. :)

following this post, does it matter if i can't squeeze the last 90degrees out?? I've got a 9a 2litre bottom end and 16v head with an AGG metal gasket. I've done the 40nm - 60nm and got 90degree on all the bots and that was a mission!! lol

Yes... do it right! If you want it bodged you might as well pay a garage to do it!

Borrow a bigger torque wrench or use a long bar if you have to.

yeah its very tight indeed- shouldnt really use a torque wrench to do the angle turns anyway as its not too good for them. i hurt my back last week when i did mine they had to go so tight, was pretty scary to be honest! get a long breaker bar and use that to do that angle turns.

It really helps if the threads are clean before you start, and if you're not using GSF bolts (there have been a lot of cases of them going soft)

the head torque and sequence settings for the larger engines can be found in the 1.3 section, haynes is a bit tight on printer ink so doesn't re-print any settings that are the same for the samller engines

Just make sure you have the torque wrench on the right setting, I've seen several guys shearing off their headbolts after having them set wrong :)
