I can't find a reason for not getting the 16v, it has everything the 8v has and more!
including the reliability, the only time it'll be more expensive is if you lost a cam belt or needed to replace the tappets.
oh and fuel if you plan to drive it how it should be driven, But thats the whole point of the mk2!

Yeah having owned both i would say the only reasons not to get a 16v are that

    a) You like to get more than mid 20's MP's per GG

    b) You have a weak mind and cant resist the addictive post 4k rpm powerband and find yourself doing warp speed everywhere and as such start shedding points from your licence.

    Other than that, go 16v.

Thanks for that chaps. I know its probably one of the most commonly asked questions but as a newbie I thought I should try and find out as much as possible. Ideally I'm looking for a 3-door, small bumper 16v but I know that that might take a little bit of finding, so I'm open to suggestions. I'm not too bothered aboutPAS as all my previous cars haven't had it. Mind you, it would be interesting to see what the car is like with and without !

I'd go 8v everyday of the week, they're awesome!
They just pull far better from down low and can even hit the limiter!
MMM, I just love the 8v power take a look here:

    Rollers

Ohh, did I say 8v, sorry, meant to say 16 ;)

I have had an 1990 8v and now have a 91 16v. I would never consider having an 8v again. (unless I was changing the engine) The 16v is much more fun to drive and certianly feels much faster.

I have to admit that there's been a fair few 8v's on here pushing good power, especially mikes and wills, and they've had alot spent on them to get to that stage too.
You could easily take a standard valver, spend little money wisely and get good figures above that of a expensive 8v.
At the ned of the day it's down to personal preference, go out and drive a good example of each car, standard and modified and decide for yourself.

Now did velly ever get that vid off his phone of me doing around 140mph? :p

    now that's torque steer

I only ever have a rant because people right off the 8v........yep expensive but my choice over a 16v :p.

Yep & shown here (the more expensive 16v's give masses of power)

& i know i bring it up but here is mine & Gary's (gvk) with 2 totally different cars/engines shown here & with different styles but it's down to personnel choice (Oops forgot to say mine was probablly 3 times the cost of gary's if not more [:$]).

My argument is Mike you can get 170 bhp by fitting a second hand 9A/ABF 16v lump - cost under 500

yep i agree gary & i think the only reason the 8v FEELS more torque is because of that initial jump between 1-2k whereas the 16v is already way above this but it is no-where near on cam so just FEELS less.

As we always say on these 8v vs 16v threads, each to their own, I guess. [:D]

With a lot of work ;) Ive only driven my valver once so far, but the 16v's get to 60 that bit quicker, and thats enough reason for me! TBH though the only real way is 12v power in a mk2.... and for you n00bs that means a VR6

You'll have to bvare in mind that Mikes car has a long stroke diesel crank that will omph the torque figure up past standard 8v/16v crank.

The mk2 above was a 2032cc abf using a deisel crank and standard pistons. The head was homemade jobbie not a 'man in the shed head' and was running standard cams and management. So if the head was a proper bench job and you'd whack in a set of high lift cams then I'd assume the figures would be that much better again.
Cost was quite minimal too even for the rebuild and parts.
