I want to go upto 280's on my mk1 from the 256's i have at the mo(mk2 16v calipers with audi carriers), but i don't want to do it by using the original mk1 calipers as they were crap. Can this be done using a different VAG carrier/spacer or am i going to have to get a spacer made?? [:s]

    [:s] eh?

you have 256 at the moment with the audi carriers and mk2 16v calipers?

to go to the 280 you will need new spacers/brackets (from a G60 i believe) for this and continue to use the mk2 calipers.

Yes i've got 256's already, but the G60 spacers won't fit the hub will they?
Cos if they did then i wouldn't have needed the Audi carriers for the 16v calipers i have.
    Does that make sense?

I know that spacers are available to space out the original mk1 calipers for use with 280 (g60) discs. But i don't want to use those.

    i'm lost then.

to get the larger brake in you just space it more, what caliper you use is not important at this stage as you would choose which one to use.

its the same as the 256 upgrade. but further out.

    Cheers for the replies guys.

I find on some tracks (on slicks), after hard abuse with the 256's i get a long pedal and fade. I've been using Pagid FR pads and Motul 600 fluid, got braided hoses too. I've just brought some EBC Yellow stuff race pads to replace my crumbly Pagids and i'll refresh the fluid and see how it is.

I never liked the original mk1 capliers, i don't like the stupid clips and never thought they had much bite.

yep i'm running the bigger servo and master cylinder.

    Velly,
i've got the bits to do the rear discs but i've never got round to it, as i did'nt think they would make a lot of difference. Do they?

do you run braided lines as well?

may be it just needs a bleed and set up again?

Drums rock!!! always been told that rear discs on a mk1 are just for show as 75% of breaking come from the front & mine brakes very well from high speeds & stops nice & true.

Word of warning with big front discs as peeps will tell you "be carefull in the wet" [:$]

i thought G60 discs were 22mm thick but mk1 gti discs were only 20mm thick, so you gotta get rid of 2mm off the pads to use them, this true??

    Jon,
I do have braided hoses as well,i put the new pads in on saturday and i'm going to flush the system and put in some new fluid, i'm also going to make up some brake ducting hose, then see how it goes on the next trackday.

Out of interest does anybody know what brake setup the mk1 vw cup cars use(ala carvell/tippett). i'm sure i read somewhere that they don't use a servo at all. Anybody know?
    Cheers
    Ian.
