    ABT - Audi 80 1991 - 1995 2.0L CPI MONOMOTRONIC,CAT
    3A - Audi 80 1988 - 1990 2.0L MPI FLASHCODES KE-MOTRONIC, VW-1

The 3A is the most commonly used engine from the Audi 80. From what I can tell, the ABT followed on from the 3A post 1990. The injection system was changed but other than that I would guess the block remained the same.

If the block is in good order and the price is right, I would go for it.

I've just been given an ABK from an automatic Audi 80, think it's about '95. That any use? The block's in perfect nick, so I hope it is!

Don't see why not. You'll need to change the sump and oil pickup - swap them with your current one.

Is it going in a 1.8 8v Digifant car?

If so, use the gearbox/clutch/flywheel from your current car. Not sure about the dizzy and drive gear on those. You might need one from a 2E engine.

Though the 3A is usually held as the best choice for a 2L conversion if clearance is a problem not only are they getting rare but pistons are now only available from Audi at nearly 500 a set if you need a rebore! If you must have the shorter block (if you're fitting it into a Driver you'll need one) try to find an Audi AAD block (even rare than the 3A!) which is a 3A block and crank but with different conrods which means it uses 2E pistons, which are cheap and available.
    2E pistons have a 21mm piston pin and the 3A 20mm otherwise I suspect you could use the 2Es in a 3A.

Guess which block I've got [:^(]

Yeah, it's going in an 8v digi. Was wondering whether a Passat GT ECU was a good plan too, since that's also a 2 litre? Just there's one in my local scrappies...

you can use any 2l block, crank sensor or not, you just use the mk2 components and a pb or 2e dizzy. its dead easy.

you can use any 8v block for an 8v head, so if ABK is originally an 8v, then yes its fine.

have a look thro the faq's 95% of the info is in there already.

check the 2l 8v thread at the top of the engine section.
