I think Daves 288s were never quite right anyway, so part of the improvement over 288s is just getting everything to work properly
Next thing will be for someone to say its not logical to think about chassis upgrades before (or at the same time as) upping the power output!
My 288s were fine, especially with BD discs and Ferodo pads. They just couldnt handle the power I was putting through them.
The Audi A3/Mkiv Golf claipers are 57mm, or at least 56.something when I measured them. Its the 280mm brake calipers that have the tiny pistons.
We are talking about Mk4s. And the change from 288 to 312 requires only a brakcet change, not a caliper change.
Suppose it could be, as I measured from outside to outside of piston. So could easily be 54mm inside diameter.
sold some 1997 288s last week, sure they were 54 calipers but maybe the mk4 chassis that started with the A3 always ran 57s
yeah i remember that well, i was more than glad i werent driving, there was ALOT of smoke. they were on cheap pads though, and look what eventually happened to them. anyway, as far as my input on this thread, as i've said, 312mm obviously gives more stopping power, but im currently happy with mine.
