Talking to my mate yesterday and normally hes pretty hot on all things cars, but he came out with a something a little worrying, he said he heard on the radio that as of 2009 the road tax for all cars over 7 years old would be 400 as its not CO2 based and they are more polluting. Ive said this is bull, but he claims its correct and that Gordon brown did say it in his budget but the press chose to egnore it and not report it.

    what you all think?

Car's from March 2001 to March 2006 will have to pay upto an additional 250 "road Licence" (tax). And it will apparently make thousands of cars worthless.

    http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/driving/article3842848.ece

As far as I can tell, It won't affect my 18 year old Non Catt'd 2.9 that belches out about 324789789327226g CO2/km

When the press sasy "Older cars" They actually mean "New used" ones and not proper old cars like mk2 gofs etc.

Nothing would surprise me with this government. They'd tax you for the air that you breathe if they could :thumbd:

Up to 7 years old, not over. Buy a pre 2001 car and you're fine.

Well, if it drops loads of the price of a '01-'06 car they coudl still work out to be a better buy though

it's a f*ckin disgrace that they are inflicting this retrospectively.

Our 2001 1.8t will be going up to something like 260 a year [:x]

So, say a 2000 V8 Range Rover will pay less than 200!

VED should be dropped completely and applied to fuel. More miles and higher consumption = pay more. Less miles or smaller consumption = pay less. tax those that use the roads the most. Not to mention the money that would be saved in policing and administration of the whole system.

The amount they'd charge for my little MK2 would mean I wouldn't be able to warrant keeping it on the road any more.. Something i'd never want to happen.

I agree for that in relation to 'private light goods' classification

you will be fine hunny, reading that its only march 2001 - 2006 cars where they are sneakly moving the goal posts in terms of the C02 banding, this means that anything pre march 2001 is fine, so the wiesel and our classics will still be safe.

reading that Ant was 1/2 right, Ill give him the news later when I see him.
