Bit quiet on the Forums this morning, so I thought I'd post a rather random query.

My Pierburg still has one or two minor problems with the cold-start stuff, though it does now start every time from cold without any need to press the accelerator pedal. :)

Once at operating temp, I'm really enjoying the way it's going. In particular, given road space etc, I'm loving the wooosh of power I get just above 4000rpm. It seems to go from 4K to 5K beautifully smoothly and quickly, with consequent effect on speed. Presumably this is the secondary venturi 'kicking in', in a big way.

My question is: Should it feel more rev-happy all the way up to 4K as well? I wouldn't call it reluctant at all below 4K, but there just seems to be a sudden transition to 'balls out' which makes me wonder if something else isn't quite as it should be? I would have thought with such a complex instrument, the design intention was for each of the systems to overlap, and produce a pretty smooth 'curve'.

    Whaddya reckon?

Blimey, you're brave! I rarely take mine over 3500 in case something goes bang!

I'm assuming timing is all OK? I don't know enough about engine design to know how power bands are found/implemented/designed/selected, but cams do have an effect and it's a question of balance. A longer duration cam gives more power higher up the revs, but idling starts to suffer, similarly a shorter duration gives a nice smooth idle, but lacks power. What I'm trying to say basically, is that maybe it was designed that way?

Pretty clueless on cams and timing, don't actually know what cam I have in there [:$] .

When I did the strobe-gun thing, it was close to lining up spot-on, looking at the flywheel v-notch through the big hole. Also think that it can't be far from ideal as my mpg is excellent, I'd've thought it couldn't be this good if the timing was even a bit out.

It wasn't really a "what's wrong?" question, so much as a "is this what others have experienced?".

I know a man who's video'd his rev counter sitting at a (5 seconds plus) sustained 6.5K whilst testing out his 3rd-gear performance! I reckon 5.5 is a sensible limit for a 16 year-old 1.6 Driver, but then I want mine to last another 5 years.

My 2nd choke linkage is buggard, falls off all the time..Connect it back upo and it seems to kick in alot better at 5k for about 500rpm..weird ! Suspect the whole diaphragm is fooooked ?

madmk4: I might be able to sort you out with that bit off my spare carb.

Is it the 'ball and socket' bit that the diaphragm drives? Looks like the black plastic socket bit just unscrews off the end of the shaft (and then pops off the ball). Might be worth a try unless your ball's worn away (ouch), causing the prob. PM if interested.

    Thanks for these replies folks,

    Pete

i found peak power to be around 5100 (tho i do have the ever so slightly different gti 8v cam) from when my driver was on the dyno, after that it doesn't totally die off so taking it to 6000 rpm or a little higher should be fine.

i've done that every now and then for 5 years of 1.6 driver ownership

    Cheers Ben, good info.

I've just won an E-Bay item that may be of use to us 2E2 'nuts' on here. A video cassette allegedly distributed to VW/Audi mechanics, relating to the 2E3 & 2E2 carbs. English-languauge and about 45-60mins long apparently. Could be some helpful stuff, with a bit of luck. Pierburg, pie & pint evening at my place anyone?

i made a lot of test on my mk2 1.6 ez engine, specialy at high revs. best way to test your torque and bhp at which rpms. just drive car in 3rd gear up to hill that angle is really sharp. and you will see that revs or rpms however on you language stay at about 5200 rpms. with that you have about 125 km/h, if hill is smoother than you can go more to about 5800 it is almost 140 km/h if you go for about. ez engine after 5200 rpm loosing torque that means acceleration and horse power.

this is link for my engine that i have recorded http://youtube.com/watch?v=ucoKppOsP0o
i drive it in 3rd gear at 6500 rpms and at 160 km/h, few days after i drive it at 165km/h in 3rd gear at almost 7000 rpms. this is small high road

with sharp hill you can just test you car because at maximum bhp it stays there, with poor acceleration +1 km/h at every 100 meters up to hill.

as i tested my car best acceleration in 3rd is from 3000 to 5500 really madly acceleration that is from 80 km/h to 130km/h
an in 2nd it is from 2000 to 6000 and from about 40 to 100

Expect so mate, hasn't arrived yet! I'll have to check it out, make sure it's 'suitable'...

One or two of my workmates made remarks like "So are you gonna watch that with your girlfriend then?" I think not.

vids like that should only be watched alone!!

to answer your question, I don't think I've ever got back 4000rpm. In 5th it has been known but as that is 100mph this is only on a track!! ahem.

A mk2 Driver track day, now there's an idea.... Might need to fix the 2nd gear synchromesh first

Bit confused by what you're saying about the 4000rpm in 5th? I was talking about 2nd or 3rd gear, though I didn't say as much. Guess I'm getting at torque rather than power. Don't laugh, this is the biggest-engined car I've ever owned  .

Actually since starting this thread I've been watching/listening to it quite carefully, and there isn't a noticeable 'step' change at 4000. It's really very smooth up through 3, 4, 4.5, then it seems to go really, really well up to 5, 5 and a bit, by which time I bottle it and change gear.

I guess it could just be the fundamental engine parameters that give this performance 'curve'. Anyone got a RR plot for a bog-basic 1.6 Driver? (Pierburg or Weber).

From memory i remember the weber conversion made the power delivery better at lower rmp's, IF you chased the revs down slowly with the throttle, to keep the inlet vacuum high, which made me think it was ignition advance related.

Anyone know of a rolling road in the south / south west area that could give a graph of bhp/torque etc? I know there's TSR, but I'd feel a bit silly turning in a battered old MK2 doing 80bhp! Just a bog standard 'set up' type place would be good, rather than a racing outfit.

my weber on the 1.6 really kicked off at 3000 rpm. just changed her to a 1.8 and am running her in so don;t really know where she kicks yet.

with a twin choke progressive carb when the second choke kicks in at half open throttle you get a boost and then theres the diaphram pump as well IIRC which dumps fuel in at WOT, could this explain the boost at 5k, it also might just be where you hit the pwer band which was narrow in my driver but was lower, more like 4k b4 gti cam 3-3.5 after
