Riiight, been pretty busy over the past week so havent been able to do as much as id have liked on the Golf, but what i have got done..

Trying the head on for abit of motivation..

Started to port the head, not going crazy atall, just making them a teardrop shape to loose the corners from the injectors and cleaning the insides up becuase they were horrid..

And just to show what a little elbow grease can do..

My rad came [:D] Its from an EG/EK, i was looking for an alternative rad to sit off to the side in order to give half decent flow to the carbs, then i saw this one used in a Mk1 on club GTI and jumped on it! Will have to mount it on a seperate bracket coming off of the crossmember in order to have it low enough for the hood to shut, but i think it'll work just fine!

Got myself a Non PAS rack and UJ from Devon Dub Shack! Dont have a photo of it before but after abit of going at it with a wire brush..
Getting the brakcets ready for paint..
New Polybushes to replace the rubbers..

And then the half way mark..
Old engine out on its way out
    [IMG]

    TaDaa
    [IMG]

Abit of a comparitor to show how much i actually took off the flywheel.. just under 1KG
    [IMG]

Then just jetwashing the bay today, ready to tidy it all up propperly this time!

Did start to do the brakes on mums 20VT Beetle tonight, but got given pads for 256mm brakes not 280mm's, Niceone Euro! Doh!

So i finnished up sorting my rack out instead, gave the gearbox a quick touch up/polish too, the paints wet in the photo and looks manky..

    Oh yeah!
Got the serpentine pulley off by locking the flywheel end using old bolts and a bar to jam it, so i had another go at ditcing the PAS pulley attatchment, it worked fine much happier using this one!

lovely golf bud really like the way you are going with it,

just a quick question you have got 4 point harness, I am looking to get them in mine, I see you can mount then to the rear seal belt mounts, and you can make use of the original seat belt mount nearest the door, but is there a mount on the tunnel side? or did you drill/weld make a point?

not had change to take the seats out to have a look

Thanks Sava, ive mounted one to the bolt hole near the rear doors for the lower half of the stock rear belt, and the other to the bolt hole of the actual clip part of the rear seat belt, should see them both just by popping the lower half of the rear seat up

Right, been abit negletful of this thread lately so time for a catchup..

So starting where i left off, i rotated the battery to make room for the rad, while i was at it rustproofed and repainted both chassis legs, cut off any unneeded brakcets and plated the holes in the bulkhead from the old heater matrix ect.

With the AKL head i was lucky enough not to have to weld up and redrill the oil return, however i did have to bring the outer front cylinder head bolt holes out to 12mm from 10mm
    [IMG]

Checking for flatness (it was perfect)

Onto making the flanges for the bike carb manifold..

Afew odd jobs done on the bottom end
    [IMG]

And then cleaning up the valves, the valvetrain of the AKL head is significently lighter than that off the PB head!

Then onto the rad, had to notch the crossmember to allow room for the lower hose.

Then it ran! rough but it was a start!
    Code:
    <embed width="640" height="1138" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="direct" src="[object Url]" flashvars="file=[object Url]"&os=0&ap=0
    It revs bloody quick
    Code:
    <embed width="640" height="960" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="direct" src="[object Url]" flashvars="file=[object Url]"&os=0&ap=0
Then i drove it for the first time! it was brief and only from the drive to the garage but still, its in the dry and warmth now..

    Making some carb retainers
    [IMG]

    Doing the scrap run..

    And then.. as it sits
    [IMG]

Drove it properly for the first time today and it seems much faster than before.. ill re-insure it on tuesday when im off shift and take it out properly to iron out the bugs.

as for whats next, im picking up an ARB and disc rear axle which ill rebuild and fit along with polybushes, i want to make myown crossmember seeing as the stock one is pretty much redundant. And some time this year i want to rebuild the head with double valve springs and larger valves and still after a cage. But most of all, i just want to drive it!

Top work - Looks really great!

Id really recommend paying to get it setup on a dyno or at least a power run to start just to check your fueling is in the right ball park.
Even my stock KR picked up about 15bhp once properly setup - well worth it after the effort of building up the motor.

So since the swap things have been going good, afew bugs here and there but on the whole not bad, especilay as this car is also my daily. It starts no problem in the freezing cold at 6am and drives great.

Some photos from the SWDubs meet, was nice to meet some new people and put faces to cars!

And this popped up from RRG, the Golf next to my favourite car there, The yellow Delta Evo!

Ive been struggling to find wide tyres, in decent profile, that arnt just track thuroughbread in 14", so i might be swapping for a set of 15"s but we'll have to see if the guy comes through..

Got myself a bunch of new Polybushes, as my front ones had to be changed for the MOT so i just chucked in cheap rubber ones short term. Was lucky enough to be given some my 87Driver when i went to buy some other stuff! Also got some EBC greenstuffs frmo him, turns out they're for the 239's DOH! not a big issue though, i have a set of 239 brakes kicking about if anyone fancies them and some decent pads.

Ive got myself a centre silencer, for those 6am starts.. just need to weld it in.

Oh and i now have even less interior
    [IMG]

And then onto the latest part. Got myself an ARB rear axle from a friend, initaly thought it included the brakes, it didnt and i was a little dissapointed but im picking up some Mk4 callipers later so ill build a nice disc setup with braided lines ect and not have to worry about the handbrake seizing.

When i got it it was horrible, covered in mud and rust, and everything was seized, so i stripped it, binned all the knackared stuff, jetwashed it and started to paint it.

    This sucked to do..

The arb will be getting another coat, i know theres black splatted on it in places
    [IMG]

Like i said, it'll go together with polybushes, braided lines, decent brakes and AlexPenberthy is making me some 25mm stub axle spacers for a wider track. Ive been offered an aftermarket ARB (i think its H&R) and i do want it, but it's alot of money and again being a student its hard enough to build a car as it is! Do you really feel alot of benefit with them, becuase im going from no rear ARB to a GTi one as is.

You don't need a ARB as well as what you're got there. My MK2 handled very well with sports springs/shocks and the same rear beam you're about to fit.

Now if only I can get my Seat Ibiza to handle as well.............

So following all of that the Golf starterted to suffer from clutch slip, i knew the clutch was new so figured it was a gearbox seal again.. So i pulled the box, could only get ahold of the clutch pushrod seal at such short notice (which was the seal i suspected it was) and i had work the next day so that was the only one i was able to change.

Anyway got all that done cleaned the friction plate with two cans of clutch cleaner and fire..and it seemed to work fine again.

Got the Golf up on all fours asoon as we got a slight bit of sun to clean all the winter grime out from under the arches and the belly.

Oh, and i saved this little beaut from the scrapyard, only went to buy some arches, came home with a car.. 1.0 4 speed, 33,000 miles, had a rear end and it was horrendously looked after. But thats a different thread im afraid..

The other satruday night i had the Golf in the garage deciding what to do next, or weather i should go to the pub. After some thought i decided to tackle something thats bothered me for a long time, the wiring in the Golf has always been a mishmash of terrible connections, crimps, scotch locks and twists. Loose wires slung everywhere and just not fun to work on. I didnt take many photos but i spent the night, and the next day going through the whole car, changing every join for a propper soldered and heat shrunk connection, cut out afew metres of unused or slack wiring, bundled, ordered and wrapped everything and found some connectoins that had got VERY hot in the past. Im so happy with what i achived by doing all of that now though, its much safer and much more organised, i also installed a small auxillary fuse box to run my electionic heathers through and for future additions.

This is a selectin of some of the stuff from under the dash
    [IMG]

Annnnnnd then the clutch started to slip again.. a week beofer i wanted to go racing! So i sourced another set of geabox seals (both this time) and brought an AP friction plate to replace the current one. Had the hole lot done in 3 hours including standing around trying to get motivated to do up the driveshaft bolts.
    Nice and contaminated..

While i was at it this time, i replaced all the clutch rubbers with some aluminum ones that Alexpenberthy turned up, ill have to get a photo of the lower one but the pedal is alot less 'soggy'.

Onto the brakes! I finnaly upsized to the 22mm MC and the pedal feels better than ever!

And then after already changing one calliper due to a damaged piston seal, another siezed on the way home from work one day. I decided to have ago at rebuilding them, and Spuey helped me out big time and hooked me up with a seal kit. I rebuilt them both with no issues and no more leaks!

I swapped the Steffan RS's for a set of 15x7 Rota (yes Rota) Grid Drifts, partialy for the look, ive always wanted a set of wheels this colour, and i never really like the shiny Steffans on the Golf. And mainly for the ease of getting decent sized tires.

Then i went racing..still on the tires the wheels came with. Ened the day with a split coolant blank, but the Golf managed a 15.60 @ 86mph on the worst tyres ive ever driven on, wouldnt hook atall.. It was a nice supprise though! i was expecting high/mid 16's! Beat a friends B16 by half a second too! was stoked!

Buttt racing hadnt fared all that well for my freshly rebuilt brakes, after afew runs that day they deciced to start leaking again, BADLY.. i was sick of them, so again Spuey hooked me up with a set of brand new Wider G60 callipers and they went staright on.

Brought some Toyo T-1Rs in 205/50 to try out, heared mixed things and they were 36 a corner so i thought it was worth a shot! i want some AD08's, but not for daily use.

Rebuilt my carbs the other day too, its only idled on three cylinders since i built this engine and havent been able to sus out why, turns out when i changed the pilot jets for 0.40's the jet on number two wasnt even drilled out.. Nice
    [IMG]

And then yesterday i changed the empty quadlamp for a dual (needs a red stripe) and put on the larger GTi splitter which doesnt sit on the floor anymore becuase ive lifted the car by 35mm
