Here we go. The base car is a 1992 Golf GTi 16v. I am carrying out a complete nut and bolt rebuild.

This is what the car was like when I picked it up. Fairly good condition to start with. Shame to rip it to piece's.

Here is some of the rot I found whilst stripping the Golf to bare shell state.

Good luck with it, fair bit of rot but nothing horrendous.

    Whats your plans for it?

'92 Mk2 Golf OEM restoration project

    Among the list of jobs lined up the main ones are;

    1. Sorting out the body.
    2. A 20vT factory look conversion.
    3. Relocating the battery and washer bottle to the boot.
    4. Using two Corrado front seats and re-trimming them in the the original 'rainbow' fabric.
    5. Uprating the brake and suspension components.
    6. Lots of power coating.

Here are some recent pictures of the body work.

Good thread. Lot of hard work gone in there. I love seeing a MK2 shell on its side!

Excellent!! Whats with all the funky primer colours? Does each one do a different job?

Serious amount of work there, going to look fantastic when it's finished! That rear suspension turret rot looks a bit dodgy? Do you think it has been caused by filler cap rot/inner wheel arch holding water in? What was the other side like?

Cheers lads. Happy Christmas BTW! The different colour primers are for spotting the low points when flatting back. The rot was caused by all the mud and crud that had collected there over the years. The neck of the petrol tank acts as a trap. The near side rear was in good nick as was the rest of the shell minus the common scuttle rot. Might be worth dropping your tanks and addressing the problem before it becomes terminal. Ill put more pictures up tonight as it's a rolling chassis now.

Yes I am planning to sort this bit of mine out next, it has a small hole where one of the screws which hold the filler flap on has corroded but the rest looks OK and seems to have been regularly cleaned out. I have a good poke around from inside the boot and couldnt find anything though fingers crossed!

During re-assembly to the rolling chassis stage the paint was left flattened ready for the final mop and polish.

Have you repaired the rear suspension turret rot yet? Just found almost identical problem to yours on my car!

    Hi Willber,
It has now been repaired. I managed to source a genuine VW repair panel that was discontinued for years. Are you planning to tackle it yourself?

Yes planning to start on it tonight in fact or at least get it all cleaned out and prepped so that I can see what i'm working with.

I have the external repair panel but am going to have to fabricate the filler neck mounting point as it just fell apart. Won't be a quick job but i'm sure i can sort it :)

    Cheers

    Will.

Here's a little update. Started on the engine work. It's a BAM sourced from a 2004 70k SEAT Leon Cupra R.

Timing belt ready for replacement. Apparently it had a change only 10k ago but will anyway as a precaution.
