does anyone know which clutch to use. 9A or KR [:s] .
    1) 9A clutch as its a 9A engine and flywheel
    2) KR clutch as its a KR gearbox using the 9A flywheel
    3) KR clutch using the KR flywheel in place of the 9A flywheel on the 9A engine.

HELP!! whats the best thing to do

Use a KR Clutch on a KR flywheel, it's lighter.

The clutch & flywheel is dependant on the gearbox you use ,as the clutch operates in different way.

(KR std)020 rod in the center plate
(9A std)02A proper clutch thrust bearing used

Yep, so use all standard KR parts. Get a new Sachs/Genuine Clutch and check the flywheel face for scoring etc. as well. I had mine re-ground just to be on the safe side but it was probably unnecesary.

You might want to do all the oil seals while you're there like the pushrod and main shaft seal in the gearbox and the crank seal. Worth checking on their condition anyway. Just think if they give up you'll have to have all the gearbox off again!

Could do the output shaft seals as well as currently that's the only leak I have in my engine bay, gearbox oil leaking out of the output flanges. Bit of a bugger to do in the car, wish I had done them when it was all out and on the gargae floor [:^(] .

Get a Sachs "Sporting Clutch" from Germany..........much stronger than Black Diamond etc etc

If your going to run up to 200bhp you'll need it believe me I went thru 2 Black Diamond Clutches on my valver which has 190-200 bhp

hope there cheaper in germany than over here. c&r sell them for something like 300 which is very nearly as much as i paid for the 9A.
surely a standard sachs clutch is up to the job (i hope).

TSR in Bridgwater ordered my pressure plate direct from Sachs...it was this that failed

    Much much better

This type of clutch is the strongest available apart from a paddle clutch which is either on or off and is useless around town,.

What sort of power are you thinking of running?

If you're just gonna keep the 9A std, i.e 170BHP or less then the standard clutch will be fine. I have a standard VW clutch in my 165BHP 9A and it's absolutely fine, no problems at all.

If you want the Sachs Power Clutches, you can get them from GSF but they're more than twice the price of a standard one!

just keeping it standard. don't need too much power around 165hp with bags of torque seems good enough for me and keeping it as original as possible will make it in-keeping with the styling. thats why i chose a 16v engine (plus i'm only 21).
mind you my brother has got an audi coupe S2 which is pretty quick to say the least and i'm sure that if i get a chance to just drive it down the road it might just change my "keeping it standard plans" LOL

Genuine VAG clutch has lasted 2 years up to yet (24,000 miles and numerous track days) on my 9A 170bhp...

Isn't it torque that breaks a clutch anyway...
