I'll shortly be fitting an 020 16v 2Y 'box to my 2.0 ABF with new Sachs clutch and Hotgolf'd flywheel, replacing an 020 CHD item(!).

I've read that replacing the main crank oil seal and inner seal is a must / well worthwhile when replacing the 'box. Given that the ABF is usually hooked up to an 02A cable change 'box, which crank seal and inner seal am I after - for a Mk2 KR or a MK3 ABF?

I see that ECP can offer both the main crank seal and inner seal for around 5 each. I assume GSF are roughly equivalent. I gather that VW charge 100+ for the seal complete with housing, so worth avoiding!

    Any advice much appreciated

It will be an ABF seal. Make sure you buy the better quality one. Really is a pain to revisit.

Also worth changing the pushrod seal and bush as they are the no.1 leak point and clutch killer. I normally fit 2x pushrod seals as insurance.

As the above, but make sure you oil inbetween the seals as back-2-back sealing requires both lips to be lubed......mmm baby!

Hmmm, Same question/answer for the 02A box on a 24V V6? Might as well change it while i have it apart!

Thanks for the advice chaps - ABF parts all round then:

    Main crank seal
    Inner seal
    Pushrod seal (x2) + bush

Just need to find someone who stocks the lot and can do it for decent money!

The gearbox seals & bush need to be 020 2Y (aka mk2) stuff.

Only engine parts need to be ABF.

Well, VWSpares were able to help me out with the main crank seal and proved to be very helpful all round!!

So, in anticipation of pulling the engine later on this week (once I have an engine crane), I have the following parts ready to fit in relation to the 'box change:

    - 020 2Y 16v 'box (in very good condition by all accounts and no problems prior to removal by G2T on the forum, who testdrove the car it came out of)
    - Gearbox oil
    - ABF main crank seal (late Teflon type) pre-pressed into housing + seal
    - Inner CV boots
    - Sachs 16v clutch kit incl. 6x Loctite Blue coated flywheel bolts
    - Hotgolf'd lightened and balanced flywheel

Anything else I should be looking to get??

GSF have the gearbox seals and bushes, although some of the less experienced guys will struggle to find them.

I would also suggest replacing the bush that is just behind the seal. This is mainly responsible for killing the seal.

As Mike said GSF and also ECP stock the seal.

Not very expensive from the stealers though.

^^ Ah, that's made it a lot clearer with those pics

Might try and find a part number for those items if they're cheap from the stealer. Sounds like, other than that, I've got all the bits I need. Also doing a heap of other stuff whilst the engine is out.

    For information:

    Guide bush - 020 311 107 D - 2.92 incl. VAT
    Seal - 020 311 108 A - 18!!!!!!!!! incl. VAT (apparently, although maybe number wrong?)

    Also:

    Flywheel bolts - N 902 061 03 - 2.87 each incl. VAT (6 or 9 required for an ABF with a 210mm flywheel?)

Regarding the part nos. above, I assume it's items 2 and 3 in the VAGCat pic below (top left)? As mentioned in the post above, the price seems particularly high for the seal!!

    020 311 108A - pushrod seal - 19.65+VAT
    020 311 107D - pushrod bush - 3.05+VAT
    020 311 113 - input shaft seal, mk2 8v, mk3 excluding 2.0 8v - 12.90+VAT
    020 311 113B - input shaft seal, mk2 16v, mk3 2.0 8v - 6.94+VAT

    068 103 171F - crankshaft flange and seal, 1.6-2.0 8v and 16v - 107.22+VAT

028 103 171B is fitted to some random models, its not listed for mk2 and only listed for very late mk3. assume it fits earlier blocks mind. bit cheaper at 62.55+VAT. This one also has a built in seal for the block face, no longer need to fit a gasket:

you wont need the 2nd one with the later crank seal (assuming it fits!)

if non ofg the gearboxones have been done deffo replace wem all, the pushrod seals and input shaft fine to get pattern parts ive got gsf ones in mine and its fine. i had to go to vw for the input shaft seal as they dont do 16v ones, but the VW 16v seal was cheaper than the GSF 8v input shaft seal at the time!

yeah it should do, just odd vw haven't retrofitted it to all the other engines it will also go on!

yeah pushrod bush and seal from gsf or the bay of e, normal 8v input shaft seal will be fine from the same place its just the 16v/2.0 8v one isnt usually available from the usual suspects but if you find a kit with one then by all means! iirc theres a seller on the bay of e who does a kit of all the rubber seals and has the option to specify a 2y input shaft seal but its been years since i needed one
