As alot of you know, ive recently converted my MK2 Driver to a GTI 8v.

Since renewing the alternator belt and putting a used alternator on, its sqeals like a pig, until you rev it a couple of times and it goes. Seem to start again if the headlights are turned on, and also if you turn the ignition off then off again.

Any ideas what it could be.

I thinking along the lines of the belt maybe too tight, or could it be the pulley and the fact its not used alot?

    Any ideas guys?

    Cheers

    Cheers for getting back

Thats strange because ive tried it tightened as much as it will go and loosened it a little and it still squeals.

Could it be the pulley on the alternator squealing ?

Oil on the belt or pulleys can make the belt slip, or if the pulleys are worn very smooth.

Yeah could be worth a try. The belt was new though. Straight out of the packet.

As they are only cheap i suppose it is worth changing!

    Could be worn out pulleys!

I might get the alternator reconditioned as it does look old and came with the engine!

could also be alternator bearings (lighter, higher pitch squeal than belt). mine lasted about 6mnths after it started squealing. if a new belt doesnt fix it start looking for a cheap 90 or 120 amp version

    Cheers for that.

I think it is the bearings, as it is a high pitched squeal.

Can i stick a higher amp alternator straight on ?

Maybe try running a little round file around the pulleys?

When the bearings on my alt went it sounded rattly not squealy.

Will give it a try, but i think this alternator may have seen better days tbh.

How much is a decent recon these days?

Is it STILL doing that mate?

If you end up replacing it, change it to Mk3 Alt setup, seems like a more reliable looking belt aswell.

Remember the first one which was totally knackered, i removed that and replaced it with the original which came with the engine.

But it squeals from start up for a little while till its warmed up.

Will change the belt first just incase, but it was a new belt on there. [:s]

like mike said could also be youve got a drop of oil on one of pulleys. id give them a good wipe down with degreaser or petrol followed by rub down with a scotch-brite pad to take the shine off. if that doesnt cure it def the alternator!

new/recon will be a lot of money. id stick with one youve got and keep an eye out for secondhand one.. scrappers will be maybe 15-20 quid or if you keep an eye out on ebay and youll get one for less than a tenner.

guessing theyll be a post on here somewhere about which cars will work as donors, lots of them. mine came off late 80s 2l 4cyl audi but more obvious choice would be 2l mk3 golf. think the 120A were fitted to vr6? you know what vag are like for interchangability :)
