obviously the car I messed round with hadn't spent his 500.

    and my car isn't a standard mk1 it's a 1.9 16v

why would i lie?? I'm not saying I overtook it at 100 or anything daft I'm just saying I kept up with it to 110.

but yes obviously if money allowed the s3 would be my choice regardless of pace

I dont think you can generalise based on one incident, after all, that driver may only have been taking his car up to 6K rpm and hence was loosing a lot through the gears, to really shift, you have to hang on to 2nd gear till 80mph which makes a noise like you wouldn't believe.

I compelety agree, a 183Bhp Mk1 would be faster than a S3, but no way would a standard Mk1 be as quick as the S3 on the same track, with the same driver.
The A3 1.8T would be even faster, as one of the lightest of the 1.8T engined cars.

Anyway, this wasn't about Mk1's was it, he was asking about S3's :p

Get onto http://www.vag20v.net and ask there....

I was just about to recommend a chat with you mate.:p

I fell in love with the power delivery of the 20VT yeasterday, and
mine's only got 180bhp - so 210 or 225 is going to be quite formidable
I'd imagine. What's the transmission loss for a 4wd over a fwd then?

    Fordo!

Cheers again for all the comments.

Nice to hear the good comments. I think I have pretty much decided to get one, I take in the comments about the A3 - but I much prefer the look of the S, plus the interior, and I do really like the way they look.

An all out racer isnt really the way I want to go - I want refined speed and comfort that I can play with when I want to, so I think a 265hbp S3 wins for my vote [:D]

I had a quick look at the S4's, but I'm not keen on the look tbh.

Although a 2.7 V6 Bi Turbo for under 10k with all the extras is a hell of a lot of car for the money :o

Right then, just need to sell my house and mk1 now...

Right, excellent, now go join the other forum I keep mentioning!!

P.S. The interior is NO different apart from the steering wheel and the glovebox badge if you get the top end A3 T Sport

Being Haldex, I can't imagine there would be a great deal more transmission loss over fwd. Afaik Haldex only sends power to the rear when needed, so when rolling and already at speed the extra weight would be the main factor slowing you down.

Yup, the main performance difference is the 300Kg extra weight on the S3, so it's like having an A3 with three fully grown adults in it.

not having any experience, take this with a pinch of salt. But not having driven either car I think my opinion is totally unbiased. I see no reason why a light mk1 golf with what 150bhp? 175? wouldn't be as fast or faster than a 225bhp S3 from 0-100, on a dry road. Think about the power to weight figures.

the S3 has a fair bit more power but then again it has a similar amount more weight to drag along too!

reading the replies, it seems certain s3 owners are getting p***** off that people are suggesting an old golf can keep up with their shiny s3. it doesnt mean the golf is worth as much or as nice, just accept that older lighter cars with powerful engines will always be faster than a modern car that weighs twice as much unless it has twice the power.

so a mk1 8v gti might not be as quick, but thats not what anyone said is it?

I'm not sure it's a case of car snobbery, which is what always seems to come into it on here whenever anyone mentions Audi.

It's all about gearing, traction and getting that power into a usable form at the wheels, which the S3 is going to do a lot better than a Mk1 golf.

Besides, he's buying one now, so ner :p[:D][:D]

If I had money I'd defo. buy an S3 but I haven't so I'll stick with my mk1 for the time being. :)

cars aren't cars anymore, they are mobile living rooms with heated electric seats, climate control, tv screens, dvd players and what not. All this is very nice but it's byproduct is extra weight so therefore more power is needed to haul it about.

A 225bhp S3 would have to be 1015kg to match my polo for power to weight and no doubt it's nearer 1500kg

It must be said that they are lovely looking motors though, smooth lines

I`d rather have a tidy Mk1 Golf with Audi S3 seats.

I think the S3 weighs in at 1400 kg, the 225 TT around 1500 kg and my car is 1640 kg

    Audi A3 1.8T = 1090Kg
    VW Golf 1.8T = 1250Kg (rounded figure)
    Audi S3 = 1400Kg
