Where is the common points to check for a vac leak on a AUM or AUQ 1.8T? as my brothers is still running rough some of the time (other times it runs great!) we have replaced the servo hose that was split, it has also had a new DV fitted.

It keeps throwing up a boost leak fault, but after a quick look I can't see any where (It also says coolant code, I will scan it again for a full list)

it is very odd as some time it runs sweet, and others the revs are hunting at idle and it cuts out some time.

I am thinking a vac leak, but its where to start! as theres sooo many hoses on the 1.8T [:s]

There are some pipes underneath the inlet manifold that are a favourite for perishing/splitting. If i remember correctly there are about 3 vac pipes; the pipes run to FPR,N75,N249 etc; and there is also a pipe which connects to the breather system. The breather pipe on the AGU i'm building has split.

Other than that you want to be checking all clamps on the boost/intercooler pipes.

Will try and get some pics tonight if thats any help.

I am going to have to build a pressure tester, I have looked at most pipes this morn but can't see anything that stands out, I have fitted a new temp sender in the hope of fixing the coolant fault, but its still not idling smooth, I have notice that there's staining around injectors 2 and 3 but not really round other 2, and the dip stick was broke so I have swapped that too

pressure tester has arrived - cheers Pete,

so I will pressure the system tomorrow, however my bros now seems to be OK-ish..

I changed the the green temp sender for a new OE one, and that seems to have fixed the fault related to the coolant being out of spec.

he now says its just a little bit jerky / hesitant when tickiling the throttle at very low revs, but when booted it pulls clean and seems to be fine.

there is still the slightly wonky idle through, it hunts a little some times... so I am thinking there is still a small leak somewhere.

Just been out in my bros, when cold and the sais is running it kangroos like a good un! Even when its not running but cold its a sod at times when pulling off, when warm it seems okpulling cleanly to the red, and seems ok in traffic other than the oe map holding onto the revs when coming off the throttle,

My friends auq seems the same, hesitant when cold but ok when warm,

The DV is a new OE one so there is something else odd on the intake side of things, but had a poke and all seems well, yet to actually leak test though should be done soon when I have a spare afternoon.

The coolant code has been up before, and last time I fitted a new OE coolant sensor which seemed to make it run a little better for a few weeks, then the cade came back (oddly my bro says it runs better when the emission light is on!)

    heres the freeze frame info

    Friday,03,February,2012,18:45:39:19627

Now and again mine will do this in the morning. Ive never got to the bottom of it though.

Seems ok once i drive off ?

I know its not related to the leaks, but my car has felt so much better since using V-Power!

I had to change the pipe going from the bottom of the inlet last time because of this. There is a nipple near the tb end.

Mine was fine when driving, but at traffic lights or when i come to a stop the revs would drop really low!

As soon as i fixed this it was ok  Had to change the y shaped breather too as it had perished.

This may help too  - Loads of info on there.

Great diagram here of the PCV system -

I chased a similar problem to this and the 17705 error on my AUM for ages. Do you have a boost/vacuum gage on the car? Waiting for an error to show up in VAGcom kept making me think/hope the problem had gone when a cheep gage would let me know all the time.
In the end I stripped the entire PCV (positive crank ventilation) down and rebuild it using stronger parts, documented here.
I replaced the plastic parts the AUM has for the earlier metal parts.

The other place for a pressure drop on the AUM is the charge pipe before the pancake pipe in the wheel arch. Again, I sourced the earlier 1.8T one which is jubilee clipped not the baronet type. That solved that issue for good but the vac leak from the PCV was the main issue.

This is still on going on my mates cupra with a auq engine, its that bad his wife ends up kangarooing down the road some times in the morning! Their 18 month old in the back is not impressed, the sai hoover also kicks in when the engine hot, if the cars left idling for a min after a drive and its all at temp it will click in, run for a second then cut out agagain, is this right? As I under stood the sai to be used at first start up to get the cat to light up faster and bring down the cold start emissions
