Yes, its conected to the shifter. I have the 2.8 engine so I would think I have a mk3 loom rather than a corrado one.

    I'll try that tonight, thanks.

I had a closer look after work and found another wire near the connecteor that i'm sure is the exciter, it was black on the outside and blue on the inside same as the one from the alternator.

I also moved the big wire to the other part of the starter.

    Heres where i'm at:

Should I have a big earth on the starter or gearbox? There is nothing there at the moment.

Right the plug you think is for the exciter wire, certainley is it. I would be worth making sure there aren't anymore dodgy joins in it. I would leave the earth on the gearbox myself.

    Great!! I'll solder it up.

There is no earth on the gearbox either.

I'm pretty sure there should be a pretty meaty earth onto the box, is that right? What part of the box should it join to and should it just run to the earth point behind the battery?

I havent tried to start the car since noticing the missing earth.

There is an earth can see it in your pic just under the thermostat housing.

Doh!![:$] How did I not see that!!! I'll reconnect the battery tomorow and see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

When I'd finished with the wires earlier I picked up my socket set without closing it properly

YES!!! Fired it up and its worked. The battery has 14v when the cars running now so is obviously recieving power from the alternator.

The exciter wire looked to have been cut when the front engine mount bolt was tightened and the big wire was connected to the wrong place.

Thanks for the help and advice:thumbup:

I need to sort my fans out next.

    Alternator exciter voltage - Help

    Hi all,

With the ignition on but engine NOT running(As i have already removed the alternator)

What voltage should i see on the exciter connector? 12v?

The car is a Seat Ibiza 130bhp (Same engine as Mk4 Golf TDI 130)

As the alternator doesnt kick in until 1500rpm on these i wondered in 12v isnt sent to it until I hit 1500rpm (which i cant test unless i refit the alternator!!)

    Thank you!

yes 12v at the exciter. also if the battery light on the dash doesnt come on, this means the wire is disconnected. if it comes on with the ignition and wont turn off when car is running then its earthed somewhere, or alternator is duff
