I'd like to swap my steering wheel for a small spline GTi wheel so apparently I need a bearing puller to remove the existing large spline adapter.

Um, is there anything else I could use to improvise or is there anyone in the Central London area who could lend me one? Har. Don't really want to buy a tool I'm only going to use once...

You can get a decent small puller kit from Halfords.

Not very expensive, and they are handy to have. Even if you think you only need them once, there`s bound to be another job they`ll come in handy for...

if you give end o column a good smack with a hammer that can get it off, thread the nut back on to protect the thread and use a bit o wood to sofen the blow.

Does that just wriggle the spline adapter loose?

what happens is the inner column collapses a bit and the adaptor pops off, then all you do is refit the wheel & nut loosely and give it a good yank to re-extend the column :)

So I tap the side of the column near the top? Or straight on the point like a nail to knock it inwards?

get a puller dont even bother trying to knock it off with a hammer you will end up doing more harm than good, take it from someone who knows!!!

My mates dad used an air chisel on either side at 3 and 9 o clock and it pinged off a good un, nearly took the caddy back window out mind. mullers the adaptor piece but its not needed anyway. aim from the pedalbox area. its awkward but does the job in seconds. any good garage should do it for naff all.

so if i undo the uv joint so its just handing loss, if i was to put some wood over the end on the adaptor and hit it with the hammer would the adaptor pop off?

with the hammer approach, what will happen is the column will collapse, while the outer column stays extended. this will pop the adaptor right off, unless its proper welded solid in place.

you refit the wheel nut loosely to protect the column threads then put the wood on the end of the column, not the adaptor.

Yes, but put the nut back on the end threads of the column, and use a piece of wood to protect it. Done it myself in the past. A squirt of releasing fluid might help as well.

Well I have succeeded with the "hammer treatment" quite easy really.

My next question though: I want to use my small splined steering wheel but since I took the spline adapter off, the spring is no longer compressed when I put my small spline steering wheel on? What am missing?

    Cheers
