Any ideas what is the reccomended width for road holding for a mk2 golf?

I currently have a set of 16x7" and 16x7.5" alloys, but I would like to go down to 15s possibly 15x8"? But I don't want the steering to be to heavy or anything like that on track days!

hmm, I thought extra width added stability... but then again 7x15 would work better in the wet and wouldnt be as heavy on the steering on the dry.

Might be a good idea to go for 8-9" on the back and 7-7.5 on the front, what do you reckon?

Are you the same iguana off the piston head forums?

Im sure if you are after terminal understeer on track & inabiliy to lift off oversteer + other odd handling querks, then that combination will suit perfectly.

I have 7.5x16 on the frontand 9x16 on the rear. Its not very good for handling. Its not totally crap but i drove my mates standard Gti with standard wheels albeit lowered and it felt so much better then my one. My one is jumpy from the back, twitchy over the smallest of bump/pothole, could be to do with the coilovers or wrong offset. Im not to sure.

Oh I see... I just thought a larger width on the rear would provide better traction without heavier steering.

Thanks for letting me know, I was about to buya set ofporsche alloys!

Iknow most peeps go with 7x15 but after watching all those Bergcup video's, how to they manage to get such quick turn-in & handelling?

mike thats a whole diferent kettle of potatoes mate, they are sprint/hillclimb cars built to do one thing, fun & frollics & gentle easy to control drifts etc are not really in the agenda, but quite simply going fecking quickly with slicks on is.

They run huge arches & no doubt a suitably wide tyre, id guess most run a fairly small diameter (if not width) wheel tho.

By a cunning combination of stretching my track, running a low ET, and holding the steering wheel tight;)

You can run wide wheels but you have to observe a few basics. Such as the front track must be wider than the rear. Also running low offset/wide front wheels requires the front steering & suspension gemoetry to be corrected. With this done, it is possible to have great handling with much more grip.

A lot of those bergcup cars use 8x13 & 9x13 inch wheels. They are not so friendly to drive and hard on all the suspension components.

Ahh I see, so if I were to run 8x15 wheels then fitting spacers to the front and haveing the suspension geometry adjustedwill improve handleing to a far greater degree?
