What selector is the best option to use in golf mk2 running cable change 02A. I have a corrado one at the moment and I find the actual lever too short. Other than extending the current on what is the recommended ideal gear selector to use please.

    Cheers

You can use a Mk4 shift setup, so replacing the shifter and the shift tower on gearbox.

Pretty sure all 02a are the same, and notoriously sh*t so I would get a MK4 shift setup when one comes up for sale. That's what i'm doing as its the most cost effective upgrade.

Is it a straight fit? I dont want to do this if it involves any major mods (cutting bits of bodywork etc). I always understood that the cables are not long enough?

Cant find a definitive FAQ on here. Lots of different combos and hence total confusion for me...

It is a bit confusing as you need to get matching shifter and shift tower if possible, as there are early and late types of cable fittings at the gearbox end. What engine are you running?

This should help you out as it details how to do it without modding the tunnel.

Looks like I dont have the time to go Mk4 right now. what is the best alternative:

Passat, Mk3 etc. which shifter matches the 02a box to get a longer lever then the corrado one?

Any particular model I should be looking for?

Mk3 Golf. They're all crap though as stated above so if anything I would expect a longer throw.

Mk3 will match the box, and is pretty straight forward to fit without modifying the tunnel (small modding of the shifter box needed.

Mk4 is better, as said, but needs the tower for the box (as you know), which is easily done, and the tunnel modded to fit.

Willber`s link above shows the best solution; Polo shift box (straight fit to tunnel) with Mk4 shift mechanism retro-fitted into it. Still need the shift tower obviously...

Im my mk1 i'v used mk4 shifter and mk4 cables with standard 02a tower gearbox end

I just modified cable ends to fit, was a very good shift

Other way of doing it is relocating your shifter inside the car, that will raise it 3 inches!

Is the shift tower just the lever?

No, it`s the whole `tower` piece, hence the name.

Is this all I need from the MK4 setup? How do I know what fits with the 02A? This one's an early one, will the cables be long enough?

The cables will be plenty long enough, but you will need the tower from an 02J Mk4 `box, since the cables ends won`t fit the 02A tower.

Or ask Sambo how he modified the cables ends to fit.

Still don't understand what a shift tower is, your previous picture didn't work.

Does it go on the gearbox end?

    Is it this?
