hi guys i was wondering what is the best track day tyre? i'm running 15 inch wheels on my BAM 20vt mk2 Golf it will have kW v2 and a diff.. not bothered about road tyres as i have a spare set of wheels with road tyres!!

have been thinking of using the usual toyo r888, federal rsr, or yoko Ao48 and wanted some opinions of people who have used the mentioned and wondered if any one had used the toyo r1r on track as i keep getting told is virtually the same tyre as the r888?

    cheers leigh

    Hi Leigh

I have a set of Federal 595's and R888's so it's the only ones I can compare. The R888's win hands down and the 595 are now my 'wet' tyreslol
I gave another club member a few laps of Thruxton who normally runs 595's also and he said he could feel the extra grip of the R888's.

If you can stretch it. Go Yokos. You wouldn't want to use anything else. ;)

No. Yokos are a stiffer construction, basically a cut slick. Proper tyre. Horrible on the road.

I have a set of Silverstone FTZ's on mine at the moment. Once up to temp they are sticky as anything. Rather on the soft side though. My old R888's lasted longer, but the Silverstones have the edge with grip!

Do not buy Silverstone FTZ's if you want any longevity.
They are quite expensive and lasted me approx 1.5 track days!

My tyre of choice now is definitely still the Toyo R888 GG.

Same with the Dunlop DZ03G - A much more focused track tyre with a very stiff sidewall...

The Toyos are a good compromise..

ive done a couple of track evenings on federal rsr and they seem upto the job for now, but are half the price of the r888s so there is going to be a difference

Dunlop 03s and Avon zzr are very good indeed, but not in the wet, and have more temp resistance than 888s (which do overheat). 888 is fine in rain and is a bit softer. Kumhos v70 are worth a look as are available in 3 compounds, k21s are soft and great in wet.

In 15s, best I have used by far for ultimate circuit use is Clio cup michelins....awesome after 3 laps to warm em up.....miles better than all of above. Full slick. Not good in winter.

    No sh*t lol

I remember going down Craners nearly doing a 'O'Dor' one cold track day in February. [8(]

Yep, Kumhos V70s are good and also have a proper slick carcass.

Nige has had good results with Michelin pilot cups, but they are 205/50x15 so may have clearance issues on some cars.

225/45-16 available from several places but might be a touch wide?

T1R' are near a road tyre for grip levels. Very very progressive breakaway, but that happens far too soon

Road modified sprint records have gone this year with shaved T1r's so they must be a damn fine road tyre, key is shaving them yo 3mm or so. Not as good as a 1b tyre though.

I ran with 225 R888's on the rear last year from an old TVR. It was just about ok but not a chance on the front. I only just get away with 595's as they bulge quite a bit.
