I seem to have broken a thread on my left rear hub and can only tighten 3 wheel nuts correctly on my 85 Gti Cabriolet [:^(]

do you think I will be ok to drive on this?

    thanks

i'd imagine it would be alright if it was only for a short distance, so long as the other 3 are proper tight, but you will have to replace the hub.

Probably OK but I would fix it ASAP. Its just the disc/drum that is threaded though so nows the time for a brake upgrade/service :)

Oh the hub AND the wheel bolts are broken  One from a MK2 can be used I think, then you can fit MK2 GTI brakes. I'm not 100% on that one though!

BTW It is known more commonly as the stub axle, unless I'm getting confused. GSF sell them new:

I don't know, it tightens to a certain degree then clicks loose again! - not clever. I thought I was being careful, I wonder if when untightening the nuts I have kicked down on the lever too hard and it has damaged it, but there does not look to be any thread damage to the nut!

Try using a tap and pick up the thread again you may get away with it.
Make sure you use correct tap as wheel bolts are fine pitched and not metric standard thread.

think from memory 4 std are M12x1.5 and 5 std are M14x1.5
Helicoil kits are about 35-40 + VAT

How far in do bolts go when fully tightened ?
Sounds a bit like your bolts may be too short and that is classic symptom of doing that as you said when you were kicking down wheel spanner to loosen the bolt should have never done that if it is in the correct depth.
So exactly how far in are they ?

Like Dave said because its very unusual to have a problem, bolt thread should protrude through he drive flange by about 3mm when tight

dont want to hijack the thread, (no pun intended!!)

but can you enlarge the mk2 thread size M12 using the same holes but into a M14 thread?

seem to have had a slight misunderstanding when i had my front hubs re-drilled to 5 stud and now the rear discs (mk3 ones) have a different thread to the fronts [:$]

    Tapping size for M14 x 1.5 is 12.5mm .
    So the answer is yes.

I doubt its this as I checked all bolts are the same size and all the others go in fine. Its just this one thread that seems dodgy

I am struggling to understand where exactly your problem is, is it the wheel bolt you can't tighten, or the hub bolts? If it is the hub you are having problems with, do you actually mean stub-axle?

If it is the wheel bolt you can't tighten, just buy new brake drums thats what the wheels bolt on to!

Can you point out which part you are having problems with:

My car knowledge is terrible, so apols.
The wheel is off the car (rear left), so there is what I thought was the hub that the bolts go in to. When I put the wheel on, three bolts go in ok, then the one at 2.00 oclock goes in to a certain tension, then it clicks and is lose again. When I try and put them in to the hub direct, this one again will not go in correctly.

Thats just the brake drum, you can buy a new set :)
Only way to fix the thread would be to drill it out and helecoil it, which tbh isn't worth the hassle when you can just buy a new pair of drums instead. (You don't really want to replace one and not the other)

Might be worth going for new drums and shoes all round, when was the last time it was done?
