Are the 'special' tools that vw use in the garages available to buy for the public through vag? If not where is a good place to buy a replica? I'm after a few at the moment, one to loosen the the cambelt tensioner on a 1.8t and also another to slaken the cam timing chain on a 20v head with VVT, i've seen the cam chain one being used a few years ago at a vw specilist so I know they are available.

    Thanks:)

Dealers will sell them if you ask the right person.
Most tools IMO can be made or utilised from something else usually.
Especially if you have a machine shop

cam belt tensioner can be release with a long bolt, if it's the plunger type

problem with the dealers parts counter, they have no idea the tools - workshop give them the number which they can order- none returnable! tools are a none profit, as supplied from VW

catch 22, you can see why the dealers just say know to tools - guy comes in wanting that tool that does that- VW workshop have 3-4 all matching the description - none the same - whos picking whats order??

I noticed a small thread in the tensioner and assumed a v.long bolt would do that one, its just the cam tensioner one then.

Thanks guys, I might try Seat, Skoda and then Vw and Audi

Can't find the right tool in that first link unfortunatly but have seen plenty of others that would be usefull!

no special tools required to lock anything, only the tool to turn the tensioner but you can get away with a pair of 90 degree circlip pliers if you have any

as of september 2002 any maindealer has to sell any special tools, this was to stop dealers having a hold over domestic or independent garages

the only problem is, the dealers can charge what they like as no one else will sell those exact same tools, and as stated getting the right tool through vw parts wont happen as you need to go onto the volkswagen dealers intranet to get the right part numbers

I might be able to help, maybe with the finding tool numbers and maybe not on the numbers, but if you have the tool number, I can get the tools here, and with the conversion rate, it might make it worth it, but the shipping will possibly make it not worth it, as they are heavy.:)

I've tried using the circlip pliers with my previous mk3 tensioners and found I couldn't get enough leaverage on them. In the end I just bought the laser tool from GSF for about 10.
I wouldn't mind trying to get hold of the part numbers for these tools as they make jobs very easy to do.

All dealers i have gone to want payment upfront as they consider non stock parts special order.

Can anyone supply the part numbers for these VAG tools?
    Counter-hold tool 3099

    Oil seal fitting tool 3083
    Counter-hold tool 3036
    Oil seal fitting tool 10-203
    pressing tool 3111/11 & 3111/12
    Many thanks

Those are the tool numbers, I'm not aware of any other number for them. Some have letters in front, like VAG3099 or a VW3099 or a T3099 or just plain old 3099, but the 3099 is the part number to ID the specific tool.

I have an old price sheet, it is not current, but I can see the old prices on those tools...

3099 is plain old 3099, and it was 40 or so.
    2085 was 75
    3083 15
    3036 45
    10-203 65
    3111-11 15
    3111-12 25

If you can't find them anywhere else, and are willing to cover the shipping, I'd be willing to make some calls and get current pricing on the tools. Send me an e-mail if you are interested, as my PM's here fill up fairly quickly[:$]

Don't mind paying postage ontop of these if they cost that much...
