    Hi all,

    I have a W reg VW Golf 1.4 "E"

Recently, I have noticed that during a damp/rain day, when I start the car and go for a drive, the engine would shutter/judder when I press the gas pedal down.

It carried on doing it on all gears upward to 5th gear.

However if I pressed the gas pedal halfway or less than halfway and let it build up very slowly, it would be smooth without any judder, but it starts again when I change gear and pressed the pedal again.

This issue would go away after 40 minutes or so and I can press down the gas pedal andit would "go" without any issue at all.

So it looks like it's to do with cold starts and/or damp.

What is the issue? Bad spark plugs? Leads? Or something else?

It's getting on my nerves now. [:D]

    Thanks all.

    Thanks for the replies.

Would it be worth replacing the spark plugs too?

If its not something basic like plugs/ht leads, worth checking the timing and the distributor.

well if its not been done for a while sparks, dizzy cap and arm would be 1st on the list! Run the engine at night and spray a mist of water over the engine and check for any arcing from the plug leads.

Well, I think I know why this is happening... there was NO air filter in the air filter box!! :o

And it's full of crap around the box, looks like I'll have to take it apart, clean it and put it back together and fit a new air filter.

I've had this car for 7 months and who knows how long the previous owner has been driving around without it! The thing is, I got it from a garage who said they did a car service. I guess they never bothered to check...

I'm going to raise hell with them and bill them for the new filter if I can!

i bet it was something along the lines of

    a) they make arrangements for the car to be "serviced"
    b) they order all the parts in
    c) they received the wrong airfilter and cannot get it in the box
    d) they cannot be bothered to get it changed for the right airfilter so just send the car out without one

Yeah. But I used the garage a few times and had no issue in the past. They was even helpful too.

Think they cocked it up, but then there's no excuses!

Ah well, got one from Halfords and will need to find the time to clean and fit it as it's raining at the moment. :(

Thanks fro the replies, everyone. Hopefully thr car runs OK after fitting it!

compare prices to gsf or euro car parts, gsf is likely to be better quality etc.

as for a lack of filter, ill be suprised if this cures the juddering issue

once you get the filter in, id recommend you try and get the car on vagcom to look for reported faults.

Rain stopped, so had the chance to take the air filter box apart for cleaning.

    Here are some pics:

    http://www.hypergallery.co.uk/vwgolf

    Terrible, eh?

One question: The top air filter box cover - it has the tube for oil overflow - it has the hole at the end, which comes out of the area where the TB is - is this normal?

Should the hole be covered up? What if the oil comes out to the TB and into the engine? Don't think it's right... but wanted to check with you.

Also, I assume I only need one air filter for the large area and not the small area? Don't have Haynes manual with me and Google isn't helping me at all.

    Thanks,

    /me mumbles

The Halfords branded air filter doesn't even fit... when I try to cram it in, it just pops out!

Since I need it now, I guess I'm better off with returning it to Halfords for refund and get the real one from VW for peace of mind!

Still interested to know about the oil breather tube as asked above, tho.

that oil hose is the end of your breather system. its normal for it to go back to the airbox or generally into the intake system.

its not uncommon for it to leave some oil in the airbox which makes its way to the throttlebody so id not worry about that

id be tempted to clean it and the breather pipes up whilst its all in bits.

Thanks. I've already cleaned it (see photos), so the only thing I need to do is to find the correct air filter that fits.
