Cheap Engine Crane

If you have a suitable garage (an up and over door will get in the way) then you can use one of these....

I've changed engines in Mk2 golfs without a hoist though... Just unbolt the front panel, bumper, X-member...

 

When I took the engine out of my mk2 I took the whole front end off including cross members, supported the engine on axle stands and a jack then roled the car backwards down the drive. When I did the corrado I took the bonnet off and used a crane. Its easy taking the front end off but its much easier using a crane and not taking all that extra stuff apart.
