As far as I can tell, the cheaper maps are cheaper because they are mapped at wider increments, say 20rpms as opposed to 10rpm increments for more expensive or standard maps.
Here`s some maps courtesy of http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/rollingroad.html Custom Code - Mk4 1.9 TDi Revo - Mk4 1.9 TDi APR (Live map) - Mk5 GTi
i'm of the opinion that, no matter how good they are or how good they think their maps are, nobody can write a chip in isolation from your engine and your car and say it will do X Y Z. fully mapable or dont bother.
Exactly. The APR live maps Awesome do, first take the original factory map, that is then sent to APR, where they create a `base` performance map, which is then tweaked `live` on the rolling road, to get the best out of the engine. Something no generic map can do.
Same as SNS do for G60s, I think. Have it on a set of rollers with an a/f ratio probe, see where it's up or down, then correct it and send it back - multiple times if necessary. Not the ideal way to map a car, but cheaper than a few hours on the rollers every time you change something.
So, are you saying that even if the car is standard, the remaps aren't good as every engine is different? Because, if this is the point, that every engine is different leaving the factory, then even the original base map from the factory isn't spot on for the engine, as they are not all the same, but because it's so lame, it's classed as safe?
so a chip, or a generic map, is bad also, because it eats into those tolerences, but based on an engine which isnt yours?
I wouldn't necessarily say "bad", it's just not "the best". Same as the timing is meant to be at 6 degrees on a KR, but you can advance it to 8 without a problem (assuming you are riunning the right spec petrol, which these days means super unleaded)... the manufacturers have to allow for bad petrol, engine wear, etc. And the same as for example an ABF is rated at 150hp, but most put out more - the manufacturers have to err on the safe side when they are quoting numbers as well, otherwise if one ABF only produces 149hp then they have sold under false pretences.
I don't need a remap. My 8v has 3 million gazzilion lbs/ft of torque anyway and would eat most cars down the strip!
the strip time would not be valid. the equipment is to measure youre standing start 1/4 mile time. an 8v is known to have enough torque to reduce the length of the strip to just over 800ft hth
i think it was unequivocally proven in another thread that the 8v would halt the earth rotating on its axis, so the strip ET would actually be in negative
My run in with 'cheap maps' was a **** time! I had my car mapped at chipped uk after alot of good word about them. The car ran terribly! It was supposed to be a live map and all the did was upload a new map and say it was done. No data taken form the car, only run once without any readings taken. I took it back after numerous complaints. They said it was my fault for not telling them about the cams i'd fitted. LOL, right... Anyway they remapped it and it drank even more fuel. WHich was nice. I've recently had a unichip fitted and they had it for 2 days not 2 hours, runs beuaituflly now. Money well spent.
