no its not, no its not, its a special super lightweight unobtanium torque momentum mobiliser that has been disguised to look like a pile of old pipe fittings :)

tried all sorts of things to centralise shifter, remote controlled car suspension units being one of the dafter ideas but this works a treat now and is cheap as chips

These are fitted to one of our MK5 race cars. I have a earlier type fitted to my MK3

I better stop looking at this thread or i'm going to find myself in Solidworks drawing one up for my Mk3 Daily driver.. slightly un neccicary I think!

What do they shift like? are they as smooth as a Mk4 shifter mechanism?

Needs the short shift components on the 'box tower to work also (see porn here).

Reason I know is I have an Ringspan/RCS shifter, which was made in a batch copied straight off an ex-works Mk3 rally car, and this was the pattern used for all of the VW Cup cars using them. Mine used to be in the Reeves' Mk1. Never worked properly at all - just long throws and sometimes couldn't get gears. All to do with the throw available at the shifter end and how this inter-related with the throws at the 'box end.

I re-worked it, with VWM bits on the tower, plus the bearing. Yet to use mine on track, but it's snick-snick on the road.

the shifter does not come with the base btw folks.

RobT's has been superceded by an improved reverse gear lockout mech also

I have the same shifter as Rob T's but with a different base, one similar to the one in the MK5 pics.

The ones with the better reverse lock outs are as per the mk5 pics again

like chris said, needs a bit of work to get it right, fore/aft is easy to sort, cross gate less so and needs a bit of thinking about - made a box end lever for mine that uses 90% of the available throw on the lever side to side to give as much room between the gears as poss and avoid getting the wrong gear (very expensive !) - also I found I needed some additional self centering springing over and above that provided at the box end, to avoid missed shifts in the heat of battle - a normal road shifter has self centering springs in it - mine now has this and has the advantage of the self centering force being adjustable - its mint now, lovely shift action and weighted to suit me

would be even better with the steve-r bearing mod, lovely job that

dont see how the latest reverse lock out is 'better' - different shape but exactly same principle

I chucked the base that came with mine and made my own - so its positioned where I want it

bought mine from Dave Turner at AMTR - helpful chap - Ringspann told me that i should deal with them as they were the distributors of this shifter for VW's

The reverse lock out is a relatively minor design difference - slightly larger 'grab' area.

Agree with Rob about the centering mechanism. I've a slightly different version of the same principle, but either way, a much-needed addition.

Its a lot easier to engage when buckled up in the driver seat. I find mine a bit of a fiddle where as the new ones are a lot more user friendly. Not that you need to get reverse much on track LOL But just when moving around the paddock etc.

"better" rob as in one handed not having to lift a pin with the other.

Personally, I see zero advantage of these other than risk of mis-shift from very close proximity of the gate and muchos dinero engine/box damage as a potential consequence.
B&M shifter reduction and uprated cable ends work just fine on dog box or synchro but with wider, self centering gate.

Its a nice piece of kit tho for those wanting the motorsport look & feel where ever you get it

Spoke to Dave at ATMR, nice chap, rang me back with a price for the shifter, tower, 4 cables and all the bits ...........................

1240 [IMG] [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]thats more than the whole budget for the car

Im going to have one more go at making one based on the MK4 cable box etc, will use the same rate of transfer across the gate but a shorter throw for selection. Plan C is under way, failing this, expect a phone call shortly Bill [:$] [:$]
