Just get a pair of end cutting pliers and either don't grip hard enough to cut the clip or blunt the ends.

I find these work very well. When I used side cutters in the past I was always cutting through the clips just before I got them tight enough. A complete PITA [:x]

That's what I use, but they don't seem to do the job good enough, I can squeeze them tight enough, even if I put a spring compressor on the hanldes and use that to wind them in. the boots still leak as the clips aren't tight enough.

How much grease are you putting in the boots?

When I've had to do stuff with minimal tools I've used side cutters sideways and still had no grief.

Also how are you putting the the little tag in its hole before you grip the clip?

I only put enough grease in to fill the joint, not the boot.

The hooks are and absolute C*NT TO get on. I end up wearing rubber gloves (for grip) and press them together by hand. nightmare of a job, but the only method I've worked out that works.

They are genuine vag clips too. I just can't get them tight enough. Grease always comes out, and the clips can still be slid around the boot by hand. I can't get them any tighter.

So is there a special tool or not? I think I'll try getting some of thos cutters with realy long handles, and modify the head with a grinder.

You need one of those metal band tool things, they pull it tight and lock it.

I've done them up with cable ties as well & had no problems. big cable ties mind, not piddly little ones.

just filled the actual joint with CV grease not the entire boot like Phat says he's done.

He didn't ask if he should use ties ;)

If you think the VAG ones are a c**t, you want to try the Ford stainless ones we fit to 1999 MY Mondeos, we use those pincers with 3 ft worth of pipe on the handles to tighten them [xx(]

Paul, you know the little tag that goes through the hole, straighten it out so it's easier to put thru the hole, you'll get it further along and tighter then, finish the job by bending the tag over the clip.

We've got some knipex fuel pipe clip pliers that do the job too.

In case anyone is not aware of how to put the clips on EASILY this is how it's done. There are 2 tags sticking on the clip, one to hold the clip (on the left) the other is to lever the clip on.

You put a small screwdriver in through the slots and use the smaller tag to lever the clip onto the larger tag. You should try and take as much slack out as possible then you only need to nip the clip a little to put enough pressure on it.
