Got a dissasembled KR 16v head in front of me. Tappets are all out. How can I tell whether they are bad? I notice that some of them have a springy action to them whilst others do not. Guessing this is the best way to tell. Can they be replaced seperately? Also, 8 have carbin build up and 8 are clean. Which ones are inlet/exhaust?
I thought it was not possible to tell faulty tappets without them being in the engine. Surely the tappets are going to feel the way they do out of the engine because they only work when filled with the engine oil and the oil is under pressure. Not questioning what you are saying mate, just curious (you probably know far more than me ) Trev
a guy at a garage expalined this when my car had a dud tappet.....sure enuff the dud one would depress and the otheres were solid
when they are in the engune running they are clicky as f**k. they arn't expensive compared to a full rebuild. trust me i know.......
I've never seen a strippable hydro tappet - am I missing something? I've had success in the past with pressurising them in a vessel full of thinners, leaving them to soak for a bit, then letting the pressure out and squeezing the gunge out in a vice. Repeat a couple of times and they are like new - but it's a waste of time really, unless you have the head apart on a sunday night, need it back together for monday morning, and happen to have a gallon of thinners, a pressure vessel, and a compressor handy..... ok, so the fact that some can be compressed and others cannot is related to the state the engine stopped in (compressed/not) rather than wear? Reason I ask is because I have two heads - one in car and other on my bench. Was thinking about mixing the tappets to choose the best ones but have also been told that you should not mix tappets from different cams. (incidentally both cams/heads are same specification - KR) Should I just keep them together?
oh yeah, and which are inlet/exhaust? no idea... hmm... what about soaking in redex/carb cleaner???? Edited by: breeze
How do you strip the tappet? I was under the impression that they were assembled and welded at the factory? If you can actually take them apart and clean them, I'll shoot myself in the face for buying so many new ones over the years!
Jesus, lucky I forgot to load it..... So basically you just yank the centre out, as there's no way to get the circlip off? I have a bucketful of dead tappets - if this works I'll have enough good tappets to last me the rest of my life.......
ok will have a go at taking them apart and soaking in petrol. 2 more questions: Is there any reason to share cams/tappets between the heads? I will have the parts to two complete heads so should I swap anything over to account for wear? (Basically cams/tappets/springs/etc) Also, where can I get cam lube? Every motor place I go to says to use engine oil on the cams when re-assembling but I'm a bit suspicious...
Now I feel like a sucker for buying all those tappets in the past..... someone put this in the FAQ section.
