Over the past 2 months due to car sharing I have driven my 1.8T GTI very little, only doing about 2 miles a day not even enough to get the engine up to temp. I jumped in the other day and started her up, she sounded awful like the exhaust was under water, there was flat spots and lack of power. After about 8 miles all corrected itself and was running fine?!? This evening after finishing work I had the same problem, I let her get up to temp and gave her a lite run and she was back to normal. What is going on with it? Is it because she isn't getting a good run anymore?
I'd say it's little bit more than its not been run, was it miss firing sign of a coilpack down?? Worth ringing your local dealer to check if theres any out standing recalls on the vehicle one for some coilpacks to be replaced
Would the The fact that once it's up to temp and had a little run all is good still point to a coil pack? And if so would Vag Com tell me if one was down?
Mine sounds similar, and ive just had the engine out and then back in. So be interesting to hear what it is, if mine is the same anyway lol.
Just broken down and awaiting recovery!!!!! Lol Grrrrr! Had loss of power and running like a bag of spanners, pulled over checked coil pack connectors which seem fine, pulled away and then it cut out, struggled to start it and now I'm waiting to be recovered! Not going to try and start it until I know what's wrong!! Is this likely to be coil pack? Please say it is and mother else is damaged!! Lol
Yep coil pack gone !!! so off to the scrappy in the morning to get a replacement!!... fingers crossed!
I have changed the coil pack but its sounding bad.... I have posted a vid... any clues?
Right found a vid on you tube which is almost the same of mine...... On the you tube page it says this guys trouble was a bent con rod... Is it a big job to go a con rod and if so anyone got an idea of price to be done at a garage or a good DIY guide?? lol
I'm bricking it as I'm skint and hoping it's an easy fix. As there is oil starvation to the head of the engine I've been told an oil way could be blocked, but god knows and haven't a clue where to start! :-(
Well..... this might have something to do with the poorly sounding car ! and then look at the state of the plug: I wonder what damage it would of done inside?!?!?
Doesn't look like a dropped valve to me. Reason being you got the plug out. Normally, they're hammered in to stay.
No warning lights at all and no faults on Vag com. That plug was just sitting there, didn't have to unscrew it!!
Get a compression test done....that can eliminate so many possible faults. Was the plug loose??? Looks like gasses have been bypassing the seal on plug and blowing by. that would be cause of misfire and low power. are threads good in spark plug recess?? I may be missing something totally obvious.
That looks like it has been run with the spark plug not threaded in at all. Have you tried tightening a new plug in and running the engine? The noise may just be the air rushing out the plug hole. Sound is pants on videos sometimes.
Plugs worked loose....check threads are ok. Retap/helicoil if necessary...insert new plug and see what its like.
Come to think of it i had a spark plug come loose on an old Mighty 8V i once owned. The noise was really bad and sounded like the engine had just As Dan said, screw a plug in and see if it runs ok. I'd check the others too
Is the engine making one hell of a racket when it's running? The rule of thumb I work off is you never turn an engine on the starter if you think there could be anything loose inside it. Turn it manually off the crank sprocket only, and convince yourself that it turns freely first. Check timing marks also and you must not force it if it does not want to turn. Otherwise you just increase your bill, which is what you do not want.
