rip it all out, all except the stuff the filter sits on.
Drill the side nearest the wing, all in teh half below the air filter.

Have to say mines and 8v and all the stuff inside was just baffles and stuuf that was going to reduce airflow!
Not sure if you have anything more complex in a 16v.

You will get better throttle response, and the car will feel faster at mid range. I pressume you mean put a sports air filter in as well as drill the box.
Might add a few horses overall, still a worthwhile mod for the money.

Mine sound loverly! Pre 90 cars have a large panel on the wing side of the airbox that you just unclip, like VW are beging you to remove it

I have put k&n filters in a few gti's that i have owned.
All have given good results, obviously not earth shattering but like i already said, made the car feel more responsive.
Definately worth 30 quid to buy one :)

K&N claim their filters have a better flow rate than a standard filter.
This is a highly debatable topic, some agree, some don't.
    Personally i think they do.
If you like them use them, if you don't then stick with standard set up.
    Its up to the individual.

i discovered and removed the pre-90-style removable airbox wedge and carb-intake blanking piece last weekend and took it for a spin - it just makes more noise at full throttle... which is exactly what id expect with less plastic in the way to insulate against the sound escaping.

unless it makes any tangible difference (anyone got any dynos with a base result done at the same time to prove it?) then id rather put the plastic back in and not have the racket

..which is exactly what i did - nice and quiet, a real street-sleeper ;)

if i wanted to sound like a corsa with an industrial sized heinz baked bean can for an exhaust, id buy one

    rant over [:$]

On a 16v do it just for the sound anyway...people will turn around to see whats coming when they hear you booting it...though it's quiet at normal driving. Also with this you don't need no loud exhaust either as this sound is way better :)

I have a K & N panel filter, which takes a bit more looking after than a paper one. Agree with Prof - am not convinced about actual performance increase. No drilled box, but a great big 'ole on the wing side.

But I gotta say the induction noise must be one of the most addictive sounds I know [:D]
